Gunkel & Sheehan’s solid outings help Wilmington University sweep Bloomfield

The Wilmington University softball team earned a pair of wins on Saturday to pull their record to 26-10 on the season. The Wildcats won their first game 7-0 over the Bloomfield College Bears and also tasted victory in the second with a 5-2 score.

Game Leaders:

RBIs: Sara Miller would lead the team in RBIs, with three in the win.

Runs: Taylor Gillis also led the team in runs, with three in the game.

Hits: Taylor Gillis would lead the team in hits with three in the win.

Home Runs: Taylor Gillis hit a homer in the game.

Stolen bases: Lexi Moore led the team with two stolen bases in the win.

Game One Recap:

Wilmington would start the scoring in this game as the team scored two runs on two hits in the top of the first inning.

Sophomore outfielder Taylor Gillis would get the action going in the inning, as she hit a ground-rule double, and then on the very next play, she stole third base.

Junior shortstop/third baseman Lexi Moore would come up to the plate next as she would reach first base on a fielder’s choice. Moore would steal third base on the following play, which allowed Gillis to score to give WilmU a 1-0 lead.

Two batters later, junior third baseman/outfielder Sara Miller would hit an RBI single to right center field to give her team a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning.

WilmU would continue to add to their lead in the second inning as Taylor Gillis slapped a two-out, two-run homer to right field to extend her team’s edge to 4-0.

In the top of the third inning, junior pitcher/second baseman Haley Downin would push in another run for the Cats, as she hit a two-out, RBI double to left field to expand her team’s advantage to 5-0.

Four innings later, Sara Miller would continue to have the hot bat, as she hit a two-run single up the middle to seal a 7-0 win over Bloomfield.

Pitching recap:

Sophomore pitcher Kylee Gunkel pitched a complete game shutout, as she went seven innings, gave up three hits, three walks, struck six batters, and earned the win.
