Wilmington University earns a split versus Goldey-Beacom

The Wilmington University baseball team picked up a split on Friday in a doubleheader versus the Goldey-Beacom College Lightning. The Wildcats lost the first game 5-0 and won the second 12-2.

Game Leaders:

RBIs: Eddie Parry would lead the team in RBIs with four in the win.

Runs: Nic Hertzfeld and Jack McDonald also led the team in runs, with three in the game.

Hits: JJ Killen would lead the team in hits with four in the win.

Home Runs: Jack McDonald hit a home run in the game.

Stolen bases: Erik Grady would lead the team in stolen bases with one.

Game Recap:

The scoreboard was not silent for very long in this game as junior catcher Jack McDonald hit a solo home run to right center field to give Wilmington a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

In the second inning, the Wildcats would continue to add to their advantage, as junior outfielder/pitcher CJ Deery would hit an RBI bunt single to third base to give his team a 2-0 edge.

WilmU wasn’t the only team to have fun with the long ball, as Goldey-Beacom’s Demetrius Johnson hit a solo home run to left field to cut the score 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning.

Four batters later, the Lightning’s Johnny Kampes would push in a run when he was able to reach first on a fielding error by the third baseman to tie the game up at 2-2.

Two innings later, Wilmington would add a little more cushion to their lead, as the team scored three runs on four hits and one error.

Senior utility player Eddie Parry would get the scoring started in the top of the fifth inning when he hit an RBI single to give the Wildcats a 3-2 edge.

Junior first baseman JJ Killen would come up to the plate next as he hit a two-run double to extend his team’s advantage to 5-2 in the fifth inning.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Wildcats would continue to build on their lead as the team scored four runs on three hits and one error.

Jack McDonald would continue to swing a hot bat as he hit an RBI single down the right-field line to give his team a 6-2 advantage.

Two batters later, Eddie Parry would push a run in when he advanced to first base after getting hit by a pitch to expand’s Wilmington’s edge to 7-2.

Junior second baseman Erik Grady would join the scoring party when he slapped a two-run single to left field to give his team a 9-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth.

WilmU was really helped by the Lightning’s pitching in this inning as they hit three of the Wildcats’ batters and threw a wild pitch.

Wilmington’s scoring ways would continue in the top of the seventh inning, as Jack McDonald and Eddie Parry would push in a combined three runs to seal a 12-2 win over Goldey-Beacom.

Pitching recap:

Graduate student pitcher Matt Boyko went six innings, gave up four hits, two runs, two earned runs, two walks, struck out five batters, one home run, hit a batter, and earned the win.

Junior pitcher Dom Grady would close the game by going one inning and striking out one batter.
