The Wilmington University Wildcats just cannot seem to shake this funk their in because after starting the season 3-0, the Wildcats have lost three straight games to a record of 3-3 on the season.
Wildcats lost Monday night to the Shippensburg Red Raiders 78-62 because of the slow start of Wilmington’s offense and the Red Raiders were hot on the three point line throughout the night.
It all started in the first half where the Red Raiders got off to a quick start with a 10-2 lead, forward John Castello and guard Justin McCarthur were the leaders of the early run. Castello had 3 points and McCarthur had 5 points during the run.
Then the Wildcats clawed back about at the 10:22 mark they were able to close the gap to 22-18. Wilmington was lead by guard Omari Dill-Pettiford who had 7 points doing the run that Wilmington had. This would be the last time in the first half that the score would be in single digits or close.
The Red Raiders then regrouped and went on 14-3 run within the next five minutes of the game. The score widened to 36-21 and then Wildcats could not stop the Red Raiders from downtown and they ended the half at whopping 47-30 lead for the Raiders.
Guard Nick Richards led the Wildcats in the first half with 11 points.
Forwards Dustin Sleva, John Castello, and guard Antonio Kellem all led the Red Raiders with 9 points in the first half.
Just like the first half, in the second half the Red Raiders just had their way with the Wildcats but the Wildcats did put up a fight in the early in 2nd half. Guards Tyaire Ponzo-Meek, Brain Adkins, and Nick Richards led the charge for Wilmington’s 6-0 run that had the score at 50-32. This would be last time the Wildcats would be that close to the lead. Both teams would go on 8-0 runs but Wilmington just could not comeback from the deficit they built in the first half.
Guard Nick Richards and Tyaire Ponzo-Meek were the top scores for Wilmington with 18 points.
Forward Dustin Sleva was the top scorer for Shippensburg with 22 points.
Wildcats look get off this losing streak Wednesday, when they head home to the WU Athletics Complex to face Millersville at 8pm ET.
