Back-to-Back Champions!: Wilmington University takes home the CACC title with a 12-3 win over Goldey-Beacom

The Wilmington University baseball team is the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Champions for the second straight year, as the team defeated Goldey-Beacom 12-3 on Saturday to clinch the title and a spot in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Game  Recap:

Wilmington leads by four runs at the end of the second inning.

Sophomore outfielder Brian Klumpp would be in the middle of all the scoring action for the Cats in the bottom of the opening inning by first slapping a RBI triple to right center and then the play after going home on Junior infielder/pitcher Chase Fleming‘s ground to give his team a 2-0 edge.

Junior utility player/pitcher Stephen Katch and Junior outfielder D’Angelo Ponce would extend the lead to 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning, with both getting runners home on RBI singles.

The Wildcats lead by five runs at the end of the fifth inning.

Goldey-Beacom would light up the scoreboard for the first time in the game in the third inning, with a SAC Fly to cut the deficit to three runs (4-1).

Junior catcher Brett Walmsley would give WilmU a five-run advantage in the bottom of the fifth, when he smacked a two-run single up the middle of the field.

WilmU takes home a 12-3 win!

The Lightning tightened the score to 6-3 in the top of the seventh with a two-run single to left center from Jake Macey.

Wilmington answered right back in the bottom of the inning by scoring five runs on three hits and three walks to extend their edge to 11-3.

Brett Walmsley continued to be a hot bat for the Cats as he knocked an RBI single to left field to start the scoring in the inning.

Senior outfielder Cam Trego came up to the plate next and smoked a three-run triple to center field to put the score at 10-3.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Zach Frame closed out the scoring in the inning with an RBI double to right-center to put his team up 11-3.

Brian Klumpp sealed the dominating win in the eighth inning by hitting a RBI single to second base to give WilmU a 12-3 win, Back-to-Back CACC Titles, and a spot in the NCAA Division II tourney.

Pitching Recap:

Freshman pitcher/outfielder Dylan Potero earned the win by going six innings, giving up four hits, one run, six walks, and striking out six.

Senior pitcher Scott Borgmann finished the game by pitching 2.2 innings, giving up one hit, one walk, and striking out three.
