The Wilmington University baseball team swept the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights in the first round of the 2026 CACC Tournament 1st Round. They won the first game 17-8 and the second one 9-5!
Let’s talk about both wins!
Game 1 Recap:
Wildcats trailed 8-0 in the middle of the fourth inning.
One would look at the final score and think Wilmington dominated this game all the way through, but that wasn’t the case, as Bridgeport had the hot bats early to hold 8-0 lead in the top of the fourth.
WilmU would answer back in the bottom of the fourth by scoring six runs on four hits to cut the deficit to two runs (8-6).
Highlights in the inning were Junior catcher Brett Walmsley, who started the scoring off with a two-run triple to right center. Six batters later, Senior infielder Tyler Pirrung smashed a three-run double down the left field line.
Wilmington takes home a 17-8 win!
In the fifth inning, WilmU would score two runs on two hits to tie the game up at eight.
The Wildcats would finally grab the lead in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double from Pirrung and an RBI single from sophomore outfielder Brian Klumpp to put the score at 10-8.
Wilmington put the game away in the seventh and eighth innings by scoring a combined seven runs to seal a 17-8 win.
Senior outfielder Cam Trego hit a solo home run in the seventh and then a two-run bomb in the eighth. Ben Cordrey had a two-run homer in the eighth inning to help seal the blowout win for the Cats.
Pitching Recap:
Senior pitcher Scott Borgmann earned the win, as he went six innings, gave up two runs, two earned runs, two walks, and struck out eight.
Game Two Recap:
Wildcats down early in the second game of the doubleheader.
The Purple Knights took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Anthony Armenia blasted a two-run homer to left field.
Wilmington University takes home a 9-5 win!
Then, through the seventh inning, the two teams traded the lead back and forth, and heading into the bottom of the seventh, Bridgeport had a 5-4 lead.
WilmU would score a combined five runs in the seventh and eighth innings to seal a 9-5 win.
Brett Walmsley, Cam Trego, and junior infielder/pitcher Chase Fleming all had RBIs during that time. Junior shortstop Justin Hernandez smacked a two-run single in the seventh to help seal the sweep of over Bridgeport.
Pitching Recap:
Wilmington used four pitchers in the win, including freshman third baseman/pitcher Ryan Kiendle, who earned the win, pitching 1.1 innings, giving up two hits, and striking out one batter.
Junior shortstop/pitcher Garrett Quinn earned the save by going two innings, giving up two hits and striking out two.
