Wilmington University Advances with Sweep Over Holy Family in CACC First Round

The Wilmington University softball team swept the Holy Family University Tigers in the First Round of the CACC tournament by taking the series 2-0 to advance to play Caldwell next week. They defeated the Tigers on Saturday by a 6-2 score, and on Sunday, they took home a 7-3 win.

Game Recap GM1 ( Saturday):

Wilmington University takes home a 6-2 win!

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Maddie Vollmar would get the Cats on the board first with an RBI single to right center to give her team a 1-0 edge in the top of the first inning.

Freshman catcher/infielder Mia Lane pushed in another run in the top of the second with a SAC Fly to extend WilmU’s lead to 2-0.

Holy Family tied the game at two with a home run down the right field in the bottom of the fourth.

Mia Lane would break the tie at the top of the fifth with a solo home run to left field to give Wilmington a 3-2 advantage.

In the sixth, the Wildcats added some padding to their lead with Graduate student Gabriella Saucedo hitting a RBI single and Freshman outfielder Addison Sabo knocking a RBI double to left center to put the score at 5-2.

WilmU added one more run in the seventh to seal a 6-2 win over the Tigers.

Pitching Recap:

Maddie Vollmar earned the win in the game by pitching four innings, giving up four hits, and striking out six batters.

Game Recap GM2 ( Sunday):

Wilmington University takes home a 7-2 win!

The Wildcats would waste no time getting on the scoreboard in the second game as Senior infielder Cassidy Zelano hit a RBI single to center field to give her team a 1-0 edge in the top of the first.

Four plays later, Addison Sabo slammed a three-run homer to left-center to put her team up 4-0 in the first inning.

Holy Family would cut the deficit to three (4-1) in the bottom of the first with a solo home run to left field.

WilmU would add a run each in the second and third innings with RBI singles from Mia Lane and senior catcher/ first baseman Rylee Maloney to push the score to 6-1.

The Tigers would score two runs in the third inning to tighten the score to 6-3.

Sophomore pitcher/infielder Kasey Xenidis would seal the win in the seventh inning with an RBI single to center field to push the Cats’ advantage to 7-3.

Pitching Recap:

Sophomore pitcher/infielder Olivia Hitchens earned the win by pitching 1.2 innings, giving up one hit, two walks, and striking out one batter.

Kasey Xenidis earned the save by pitching three innings, giving up one walk, and striking three batters out.
