Wilmington University earns a split versus Felician

The Wilmington University softball team saw their nine-game winning streak end on Friday, but the team did pick up one win on the day over the Felician University Golden Falcons. The Wildcats won game one 5-1 and lost the second 4-0.

Game Leaders:

RBIs: Lexi Moore would lead the team in RBIs, with two in the win.

Runs: Tristyn Stewart, Taylor Gillis, Moore, Haley Downin, and Isabella Eleazar also led the team in runs, with one in the game.

Hits: Gillis would lead the team in hits with two in the win.

Home Runs: Downin hit one home run in the game.

Stolen bases: Gillis led the team with two stolen bases in the win.

Game one Recap:

Pitching dominated the first two innings, as there was a combined three hits between the two teams during that time.

In the top of the third inning, WilmU’s lineup would start to come alive as the team had three runs on three hits.

The inning started with sophomore catcher/outfielder Tristyn Stewart hitting a single to the Felician’s shortstop, who then advanced to second base on a throwing error.

Sophomore outfielder Taylor Gillis was the next batter up, as she hit a single to left field. On the very next play, she would steal second base.

Junior shortstop/third baseman Lexi Moore would come up to the plate and hit a two-run single to the right-center field to give Wilmington a 2-0 lead.

Three batters later, junior infielder Bri Coyle would hit an RBI ground out to extend her team’s advantage to 3-0.

Fast forward to the sixth inning, where the Wildcats added two more runs from three hits.

Junior pitcher/second baseman Haley Downin started the inning off with a bang as she hit a solo home run to expand Wilmington’s lead to 4-0.

Four batters later, Taylor Gillis would hit an RBI single down the right field line, which gave her team a 5-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Golden Falcons would score their first run of the day, but the Wildcats would still get a 5-1 victory.

Pitching recap:

Sophomore pitcher Kylee Gunkel confused the Felician batters all day, as she went seven innings, gave up four hits, one run, one earned run, two walks, eight strikeouts, and earned the win.
