Delaware State earns a split versus South Carolina State

The Delaware State softball team picked up a split on Saturday in the doubleheader versus the South Carolina State University Bulldogs. The Hornets dropped the first game 4-2 and won the second 4-2.

Let’s talk about their Game two 4-2 win!

Game Leaders:

RBIs: Britney Phally would lead the team in RBIs, with two in the win.

Runs: Emma Crowe, Emma Glawson, Julianna Cerron, and Kayla Lester also led the team in runs, with one in the game.

Hits: Crowe, Glawson, Phally, Uxua Modrego Lopez, and Joie Raybourn would lead the team in hits, with one in the win.

Stolen bases: Modrego Lopez and Crowe led the team with one stolen base in the game.

Game two recap:

Pitching dominated the first five innings of this game, as the two batting lineups had a combined one hit during that time.

Delaware State’s batters would start to spark in the top of the sixth inning, as the team scored two runs on three hits.

The inning started with sophomore first baseman Emma Crowe hitting a double to left field.

Senior designated hitter Joie Raybourn would be the next batter up, as she would hit a single.

On the next play, freshman infielder Britney Phally would hit a two-run single, which gave the Hornets a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, South Carolina State would close the gap on DSU’s lead by pushing in a run to cut the score to 2-1.

Delaware State would answer right back in the top of the seventh inning by scoring two more runs to extend their advantage to 4-1.

The inning would start with senior left fielder Emma Glawson hitting a single to left field.

Then the next two batters, junior infielder Julianna Cerron and Emma Crowe, would get on base from fielding errors by the Bulldogs. During that time, Glawson would score to expand Hornets’ edge to 3-1.

In the following play, Cerron would find the home plate on a throwing error from South Carolina State, which would put DSU up 4-1.

The Bulldogs would score one more run in the bottom of the seventh, but DSU would hang on to win 4-2.

Pitching recap:

Junior pitcher Mayanah McIntosh had a solid outing, as she went seven innings, gave up four hits, two runs, two earned runs, three walks, five strikeouts, and earned the win.
