Wilmington University’s six-run fourth inning leads to a 9-2 CACC opening win over Chestnut Hill

The Wilmington University baseball team earned their eighth win of the season on Wednesday with a 9-2 victory over the Chestnut Hill College Griffins in the CACC opener.

Game Leaders:

RBIs: Tyler Pirrung would lead the team in RBIs with four in the win.

Runs: CJ Deery and Pirrung also led the team in runs with two in the game.

Hits: Adrian Jimenez would lead the team in hits with two in the win.

Stolen bases: Pirrung and Erik Grady would lead the team in stolen bases with two.

Game Recap:

Wilmington would get the scoring started in this game when senior utility player Eddie Parry hit an RBI sacrifice fly to left field to give his team a 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats didn’t have any hits in the first inning, but they stole two bases and were helped by Chestnut Hill with a throwing error and a passed ball.

Two innings later, Wilmington would add another run to their advantage as they would push the score to 2-0.

The third inning started with junior outfielder/pitcher CJ Deery hitting a double down the left field line, and on the next play, he would advance to third on a wild pitch.

Freshman infielder Tyler Pirrung would be the next batter up, as he grounded out, but it would allow Deery to score to put the team’s lead at 2-0.

In the fourth inning, the Wildcats found the scoring touch as the team pushed through six runs during that time to expand their lead to 8-2.

One of the highlights in the inning came from Tyler Pirrung, who hit a three-run double to right center field and scored on a wild pitch two plays later.

WilmU kept the baserunners moving in the fourth inning by stealing three bases. They were also helped by the Griffins’ defense, as Wilmington’s players were hit by a pitch twice, were issued a walk, and advanced on the base from a throwing error in the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Chestnut Hill would score their first run of the day to cut the deficit to 8-1.
The Griffins would score another lone run in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 8-2.

Fast forward to the ninth inning, where Eddie Parry would hit an RBI single up the middle of the field to seal a 9-2 victory.

Pitching recap:

Junior pitcher Matt Warrington threw a gem in Wednesday’s victory, as he went seven innings, gave up five hits, two runs, one earned run, one walk, four strikeouts, and earned the win.

In the eighth inning, junior pitcher Tyler Brown would give the Chestnut Hill problems by giving up zero hits, zero runs, and striking out one batter.

Junior pitcher Dom Grady would close the game by giving up one hit and striking out two batters in one inning.
