Delaware State hangs on to win 58-51 in season opener vs Rider

The Delaware State University women’s basketball team opened up their 2020 season on Saturday with a close 58-51 win against the Rider University Broncs. This is the Lady Hornets’ first opening day win since 2011 when the team defeated Wilmington University 80-32.

The leading scorers of the game for the Hornets were senior guard/forward Sharajah Collins and senior forward Melissa Sam, who each scored 11 points.

Senior forward DeMaurea Moore also scored in double-digits in the win as she had 10 points.

Senior forward Zoe Holmes was cleaning up on the boards in this win as she had ten rebounds.

Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which, included second-chance points (14-4), fast-break points (12-4), rebounds (42-25), assists (17-6), and steals (8-5).

DSU also bested the Broncs at the three-point line as the team shot 19.0 % (4-21) and Rider University shot 16.7 % (2-12).
