Blue Hens Coach Natasha Adair Gets 100th Win with 70-59 Win Vs William & Mary

The University of Delaware women’s basketball team has now won three straight games as the team beat William & Mary 70-59  on Friday at Kaplan Arena.

The leading scorer for the Blue Hens in the game was junior guard Abby Gonzales who scored 16 points.

Sophomore forward Lizzie Oleary also scored in double digits in the Blue Hens win with 10 points.

Freshman guard/forward Jasmine Dickey was the top Blue Hen on the boards in the game as she collected 10 rebounds.

The Blue Hens Head Coach Natasha Adair hit a significant milestone in the win with now having 100 victories under her belt in a seven year coaching career.

Delaware had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which included Points in the Paint ( 32-20), Points off Turnovers (20-16), Second Chance Points ( 10-2), Bench Points (27-18), Rebounds ( 40-26) and Blocks ( 6-5).

Blue Hens also had the advantage in shooting as well, with the team shooting 46.6 % (27-58) and with William & Mary shooting 37.7 % ( 20-53). The Hens also bested the Tribe from the three point line as well with the team shooting 45.5 % (5-11) and William & Mary shooting 40.0 % (6-15).

The Tribe out shot Delaware at the free throw line as the team had a 81.3 % shooting percentage  (13-16) and Blue Hens had a 68.8 % shooting percentage.

 

Gonzales Scores 8 To Help Blue Hens To Early Lead In First Period

The leading scorer in the first period for the Blue Hens was Abby Gonzales who had eight points in the period. As a team, Delaware shot 52.9% ( 9-17) and the team also shot  50% ( 3-6) at the three point line.

The Tribe did not have too much trouble finding the basket as well as the team shot 58.3% (7-12) in the first period. William & Mary also shot 50% (2-4) at the three point line in the first period.

Delaware won the turnover battle in the first period by 2-6.

William & Mary out rebounded the Blue Hens 8-5 in the first period.

The game started with the Blue Hens jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead which happened with back to back three pointers by Gonzales and Junior forward Rebecca Lawrence.

The Hens went on another run at the 6:30 minute mark in the period, as the team went on a 9-0 run to increase their lead to 18-6 with 4:14 left in the first period.

The Tribe would outscore the Hens 12-5 for rest of the period but Delaware would still lead 23-18 after one.

Both Teams Shooting Cools Down But Hens Take Halftime Lead

The second period was not kind to either team as both teams struggled with shooting in the period. Delaware dipped in the second period with a 30.8% ( 4-13) shooting percentage. The Blue Hens did shoot 66.7% (4-6) at the foul line in the second period.

William & Mary’s shooting percentage took a deeper dive then the Blue Hens as the team shot 26.7% (4-15) in the second period.

Delaware out rebounded William & Mary 16-5 in the second period.

The Tribe won the turnover battle by 2-6 in the second period.

William & Mary started the second period on a 5-2 to run which decreased Delaware’s lead to 25-24 with 6:15 left in the half.

The Blue Hens would outscore the Tribe 10-6 for the rest of the period to take a 35-30 lead to halftime.

 

First Half Stats

Delaware had 43.3 % (13-30) shooting percentage in the first half and William & Mary had 40.7 %(11-27).

Blue Hens shot 66.7 % (6-9) from the foul line in the first half and The Tribe shot 66.7 % ( 4-6)

Hens leading scorer in the first half was  Abby Gonzales with 10 points.

William & Mary’s leading scorers in the first half were Victoria Reynolds and Bianca Boggs with seven  points.

Delaware’s Shooting Improves As They Extend Their Lead In The Third Period

Delaware shot their best shooting percentage in the game in the third period  by shooting 53.3% (8-15).

The Tribe also improved their shooting as well with the team shooting 42.9% (6-14) in the third period.

The third period started with William & Mary outscoring the Blue Hens 8-4 which decreased Delaware’s lead to 39-38 with 6:09 left in the period.

The Blue Hens would go on a run of their own at the 4:50 minute mark, as the team went on a 10-0 run to increase their lead to 49-38 with 3:01 left in the third period.

The Tribe would outscore the Hens 8-5 for the rest of the period but Delaware would still take a 54-46 lead into the fourth.

 

Gonzales & Dickey Combine For 12 Pts In Fourth To Seal Win

The leading scorers in the fourth period for the Blue Hens were Jasmine Dickey & Abby Gonzales with six points each. As a team, Delaware shot 46.2% ( 6-13) in the fourth period.

The Blue Hens did a good job at keeping the William & Mary shooters unbalanced as they shot 25.0% ( 3-12) in the period.

The Hens would outscore the Tribe 16-13 in the period to take home a 70-59 road win when the final buzzer sounded.

The Blue Hens stay on the road as the team takes on Elon on Super Bowl Sunday ( February 3rd) at 2:00pm ET.
