The University of Delaware women’s basketball team won their second straight game on Sunday as they defeated the College of Charleston Cougars at the Bob Carpenter Center.
The leading scorer for the Blue Hens in the game was Freshman guard/forward Jasmine Dickey who scored 17.
Junior forward Rebecca Lawrence recorded a double-double in the Blue Hens win with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Two other Blue Hens scored in double digits in the Hens win and they were junior forward Samone DeFreese (14) and freshman guard Paris McBride (12).
Delaware had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which included Points in the Paint ( 36-24), Fast Break Points (17-4), Bench Points ( 37-18), Points off Turnovers (24-8), Assists (15-9), Blocks ( 7-5) and Steals (15-8).
Blue Hens also won the turnover battle in the game by 11-18.
Blue Hens also had the advantage in shooting as well, with the team shooting 42.1 % (24-57) and College of Charleston shooting 26.6 % (17-64). The Hens also bested the Cougars from the three point line as well with the team shooting 33.3 % (3-9) and College of Charleston shooting 20.0 % (5-25).
Delaware also out shot the Cougars at the free throw line as the team shot 82.1 % (23-28) and College of Charleston shot 68.8 % (11-16).
DeFreese Scores Nine To Give Hens 12 Point First Period Lead
The leading scorer for the Hens in the first period was Samone DeFreese who scored nine points. As a team, Delaware shot 42.1% ( 8-19) in the first period and the Blue Hens also shot 100% (5-5) at the foul line.
The Cougars had a hard time finding good shots in the first period with the team shooting 26.3% ( 5-19).
The game started with Delaware jumping out to a quick 12-0 lead which was led by DeFreese who scored six of the twelve points in the run.
The Hens went on another run around the 2:41 minute mark, as the team outscored the College of Charleston 7-2 to end the period with a 22-10 lead.
Cougars Show Some Life But Not Enough As Hens End With Halftime Lead
In the second period, the Blue Hens cooled down in shooting as the team shot 40.0% (4-10). The Hens did shoot 83.3% ( 5-6) at the foul line in the second period.
The College of Charleston shot 30.8% (4-13) in the second period and had a 75.0% (6-8) shooting percentage from the foul line.
The Cougars out rebounded Delaware 12-5 in the second period of the game.
The second period started with the College of Charleston going on a 10-1 run to decrease the Blue Hens lead to 23-20 with 5:57 left in the half.
Then the Blue Hens went on their own run at the 5:33 minute mark which the team outscored the Cougars 12-6 to take a 35-26 lead to halftime.
First Half Stats
Delaware had 41.4 % (12-29) shooting percentage in the first half and College of Charleston had 28.1 % (9-32).
Blue Hens shot 90.9 % (10-11) from the foul line in the first half and Cougars shot 75.0 % ( 6-8)
Hens leading scorer in the first half was Samone DeFreese with 11 points.
The College of Charleston leading scorer in the first half was Latrice Perkins with six points.
 Dickey Scores 11 To Help Hens Distance Themselves From Cougars In 3rd Period
The leading scorer for the Hens in the third period was Jasmine Dickey who scored 11 points. Dickey’s teammate Paris McBride was right behind her with scoring 10 points in in the third period.
In the third period, Delaware shot 46.7% (7-15) and 78.6% (11-14) at the free throw line.
Blue Hens had the Cougars unbalanced as the team had a lot trouble finding any good shots as they shot 27.8% ( 5-18).
The third period started with the College of Charleston going on a 8-0 run which decreased Delaware’s lead to 35-34 with 8:33 left in the period. The Cougars took their first lead in the game when Tyler Collins hit a three pointer with 6:33 left in the third period.
The Blue Hens would take the lead back with a 25-1 run which gave them a 62-40 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The run was led by Dickey who scored 11 of the 25 points in the run.
Delaware’s Defense Keep Cougars In Check In The 4th Period To Seal Win
In the fourth quarter, it was all about how the Hens kept the College of Charleston from finding any good shots as the team shot 21.4% (3-14). Delaware cooled down in the fourth period as the team shot 38.5% (8-13).
The fourth period started with the Cougars going a 6-2 run which decreased the Blue Hens lead to 64-46 with 6:29 left in the game.
The Hens went on a run of their own at the 5:27 minute mark, as the team out scored the College of Charleston 10-4 to seal a 74-50 home win.
The Blue Hens look to make it three straight wins as the team heads on the road to take on William & Mary on February 1st at 7:00pm ET.
