The Goldey-Beacom College women’s basketball team won their second straight game with a 81-62 win over Holy Family University Tigers on Tuesday at the the Joseph West Jones College Center.
The leading scorer for the Lightning in the game was junior guard Amanda McGrogan who scored 23 points.
Sophomore forward Alanna Speaks had a double-double in Goldey-Beacom’s win with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Two other Goldey Beacom players scored in double-digits and they were freshman guard Sarah Round (17) and senior guard Tanner Turner-Rush (14).
Goldey-Beacom had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which included Points in the Paint ( 36-24), Points off Turnovers (11-10), Second Chance Points (15-8), Rebounds (38-34) and Blocks (4-2).
The Lightning also won the turnover battle in the game by 8-10.
Goldey-Beacom also held an advantage in shooting over Holy Family with shooting overall 48.4 % (30-62) and Holy Family shooting 39.1 % (25-64). The Lightning also dominated at the foul line where they shot 85.7 % ( 12-14).
Turner-Rush Scores 7 but Lightning Trailed By One After One Quarter
The leading scorer for Goldey-Beacom in the first quarter was Tanner Turner-Rush who scored seven points. As a team, the Lightning shot 40% ( 6-15) in the first quarter and Holy Family shot 50% ( 8-16).
The first quarter started with the Lightning going on a 6-2 run, but the lead did not last long as the Tigers tied it up at six with 6:46 remaining in the quarter.
Goldey-Beacom did go on another run which was a 6-0 run to give the team a 12-9 lead with 5:41 remaining in the first quarter.
Holy Family would tie the game on the next play with a Molly Masciantonio three pointer with 4:16 left in the first quarter.
In the remaining minutes of the quarter, the two teams would battle it out with the lead constantly changing between them.
The quarter would end with Holy Family leading the Lightning 18-17.
Goldey-Beacom’s Scoring Outburst In 2nd Qtr Gives Them A Comfortable Lead
The leading scorer for the Lightning in the second quarter was Amanda McGrogan who scored eight points. McGrogan’s teammate Sarah Round was right behind her with scoring six points in the quarter.
In the second quarter, Goldey-Beacom shot 44.4% (8-18) and the team also shot 71.4% ( 5-7) at the foul line.
The Tigers struggled with shooting in the second quarter as the team shot 35.7% ( 5-14).
Around the 6:49 minute mark, the Lightning went on 19-6 run which gave them a 40-29 lead going into halftime.
First Half Stats
Goldey-Beacom shot 42.4 % ( 14-33) in the first half and Holy Family shot 43.3 % (13-30).
The Lightning shot 80.0 %(8-10) at the free throw line and the Tigers shot 0.0 % (0-0).
The leading scorer for Goldey-Beacom in the first half was Amanda McGrogan with 10 points.
The leading scorer for the Tigers in the first half was Molly Masciantonio with four points.
Holy Family Makes Inroads on Lead But Lightning Still End With 3rd Quarter Lead
Goldey-Beacom shot their best shooting percentage in the game in the third quarter with 62.5% ( 10-16). Holy Family also improved their shooting as the team shot 50.0% (8-16) in the third quarter.
The Lightning outscored the Tigers 24-23 in the quarter to take a 64-52 lead into the fourth.
McGrogan Scores 7 To Help The Lightning Seal Their 2nd Straight Win
The leading scorer in the fourth quarter for Goldey-Beacom was Amanda McGrogan who scored seven points. As a team, the Lightning shot 46.2% (6-13) in the fourth quarter.
Holy Family shot their worst shooting percentage of the game in the fourth quarter with 22.2% ( 4-18).
Starting at the 5:38 minute mark, the Lightning went on a 11-0 run which increased their lead to 81-56 with 3:11 left in the game. Alanna Speaks led the charge on the run with scoring five out of the 11 points in the run.
The Tigers would score six more points but it did not matter as Goldey-Beacom walked away with a 81-62 home win.
The Lightning will look for their third straight victory when the team takes on Post at home on February 9th at 4 pm ET.
