The Route 1 Rivalry trophy will stay in Newark, Delaware, as the University of Delaware women’s basketball team made easy work of their in-state rival, the Delaware State University Hornets.
Fifth-year guard Jewel Smalls was the leading scorer for the Blue Hens in the win, as she had 18 points.
Also, fifth-year guard/forward Makayla Pippin recorded a double-double in the game with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Two other Hens players who scored in double-digits were Senior center Klarke Sconiers (12), and freshman guard Nakiyah Mays-Prince (10).
Delaware had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included points in the paint (36-24), points off of turnovers (27-14), second-chance points (18-12), fast-break points (13-7), bench points (23-5), rebounds (51-30), assists (17-3), blocks (4-0), and steals (9-8).
Delaware also had the advantage in shooting, with the team shooting 41.5% (27-65) and Delaware State shooting 29.1 % ( 16-55). The Blue Hens also bested the Hornets from the three-point line, with the team shooting 25.0 %(7-28) and Delaware State shooting 8.3 %(1-12). Delaware was also the better team at the free-throw line in this game, as the team shot 76.5 %(13-17), and the Hornets shot 73.1 % (19-26).
