The Route One Rivalry trophy stays in Newark after the University of Delaware’s football team defeated their in-state rivals, the Delaware State University Hornets, 35-9 on Saturday. Now the score says a blowout happened, but the game was pretty close in the first half until Delaware started finding their groove after the third-quarter fumble by the Hornets.
The Blue Hens are now 11-0 all-time in the series versus the Hornets.
The offensive standouts in the game for Delaware were Graduate student Quarterback Nolan Henderson, junior running back Marcus Yarns, Graduate student Thyrick Pitts, and fifth-year tight end Braden Brose.
Henderson went 21 for 36 with 240 passing yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions in the win.
Yarns had 99 yards on four carries with one touchdown in the game.
Pitts had seven receptions for 94 yards and one touchdown in the win.
Brose had three receptions for 37 yards and two touchdowns in the game.
On the defensive side, Graduate student linebacker Johnny Buchanan continues his streak of being the Hens’ top tackler as he led the team with 15 tackles in the game. Also, Graduate student linebacker Drew Nickles picked up a sack in the win versus the Hornets. Fifth-year defensive back Noah Plack had four tackles and forced a fumble in the game. Last but not least, fifth-year defensive back Kedrick Whitehead had three tackles and recovered one fumble in the win.
