The University of Delaware men’s basketball team is bringing home the Route 1 trophy back to Newark, as they defeated their in-state rivals, the Delaware State University Hornets, 59-48. The University of Delaware swept the Route 1 Rivalry battle this year, as the women’s basketball team also beat DSU back in November.
The leading scorer for the Blue Hens in the win was junior guard Jameer Nelson Jr., who had 16 points.
Fifth-year guard Ryan Allen also scored in double-digits in this game as he had 14.
Delaware had the advantage in multiple categories in this game, which included points in the paint (24-20), points off turnovers (23-8), bench points (16-10), assists (12-5), turnovers ( 23-18), and blocks (5-4).
The Blue Hens also had the advantage of shooting as well, with the team shooting 44.4 %( 24-54) and with Delaware State shooting 34.0 %( 16-47). Delaware also bested the Hornets at the three-point line as the team shot 33.3 %(9-27), and DSU shot 59.1 %(13-22).
