2-0: Blue Hens lockdown defense key in 31-3 win over Stony Brook

All tied up at three after one-quarter of play

The game started with Delaware’s defense stonewalling the Stony Brook offense, which forced a three and out, and the Hens offense would get the ball for the first time in the quarter with 13:04 on the clock.

The first scoring drive of the game would start at their own 50-yard line, which the Blue Hens would march 24 yards down the field for a 43-yard field goal from sophomore kicker Ryan Coe. Coe’s field goal would give Delaware a 3-0 lead with 10:35 left in the first quarter.

There were two big chunk plays on the scoring drive for the Hens, which the first one was quarterback Nolan Henderson finding wide receiver Thyrick Pitts for 12 yards.

Redshirt senior running back Dejoun Lee had the other chunk play on the scoring drive as he rushed for 12 yards to push his team to the 26-yard line of the Seawolves.

Stony Brook’s third drive of the game had the team starting on Delaware’s 26-yard line, which was thanks to a fumble recovery. The Seawolves took full advantage of the good field position as the team marched 20 yards for a made 24-yard field goal attempt from Angelo Guglielmello.

Delaware scores 14 points in the second quarter

The Blue Hens did not waste any time getting points on the board in the second quarter as the team marched 71 yards down the field, which ended with Nolan Henderson finding running back Mateo Vandamia for a 21-yard touchdown catch. Vandamia’s touchdown would push the Hens lead to 10-3 with 12:39 left in the second quarter.

Other than the scoring play, another highlight was Henderson finding wide receiver Gene Coleman II for a 22-yard catch which set the team up at Stony Brook’s 35-yard line.

The Hens’ next scoring drive in the second quarter would start at their own thirty-yard line as the team would march 70 yards down the field, which ended with tight end Bryce De Maille running in the end zone for a one-yard touchdown. De Maille’s touchdown extended Delaware’s lead to 17-3 with 8:39 left in the first half.

A couple of highlight plays on the scoring drive came from Thyrick Pitts and Dejoun Lee.

Pitts had an 18-yard reception to start the drive, which took the team their own 48-yard line.

Lee rushed for 16 yards on a play that pushed the team to the Seawolves’ 19-yard line.

In the remaining minutes of the first half, the Blue Hens defense shut down Stony Brook’s offensive attack as the team forced a fumble and made the Seawolves punt.

Blue Hens score seven more points in the third quarter

Delaware’s defense continued to suffocate Stony Brook’s offense as their first two drives of the second half resulted in punts.

The Blue Hens would have a scoring drive on their third possession of the ball in the second half. The Hens would start at their own 30-yard line as the team marched 69 yards down the field, which ended with a crazy play to score. It was third and nine with Delaware at the Seawolves 39 yard line when Nolan Henderson found Gene Coleman II for a 14-yard catch, but he fumbled it. Mateo Vandamia would pick it up and run the ball the rest of the way for the score, which gave the Hens a 24-3 lead with 4:39 left in the third quarter.

The Hens win by 28

In Stony Brook’s first two possessions of the fourth quarter, both would end in turnovers with one fumble and one interception.

After the inception by Dae’Lun Darien, the Blue Hens offense would start on the Seawolves 36 yard line, which the team took full advantage of the field position. The Hens marched 36 yards down the field on the drive, which ended with Nolan Henderson finding Thyrick Pitts for the 21-yard touchdown. Pitts touchdown would give Delaware a 31-3 lead with 10:16 left in the game.

The Blue Hens defense would do the rest as they forced Stony Brook offense to cough up another fumble and interception to seal the 31-3 win.
