Delaware Sports Blitz will be showcasing student-athlete performances from this past season each week.
Each week we will look at different colleges from the state of Delaware and showcase their athlete’s performance in the chosen sport of the week.
This week is all about Delaware’s softball team which will continue with the senior pitcher Sarah Piening.
Piening had a 2.30 ERA, 5-0 record, gave up 29 hits, 12 runs, eight earned runs, three walks, 13 strikeouts, three doubles and one home run in 24.1 innings pitched in nine appearances. The senior pitcher gave up the least runs, hits, earned runs, walks, doubles, and triples ( co-leader) in the 2020 season.
The Old Tappan, New Jersey native was among the best in the Colonial Athletic Association in earned run average, as Piening placed in the eighth spot with 2.30. The Delaware pitcher was also second in the CAA in wins with 5.

Delaware Opens The Season With A 4-0 Win Vs Georgetown
The Blue Hens scored one run in the first inning and three in the fourth to come away with a 4-0 season-opening win over Georgetown on February 7th.
Piening pitched four innings, gave up three hits, one walk and had a strikeout in the win.
The Blue Hens Get A 9-6 Win Vs UConn
UConn was down 9-0 by the fourth inning to the Hens, the team would tighten the score in the later innings but Delaware would hang on to win 9-6.
Piening pitched 4.1 innings, two hits, four runs, one earned run, three strikeouts, and hit three batters in the win.
UD Winning Streak Hits Six
Despite getting out hit in this one (11-8), The Hens used the hits they did get and turned them into six runs. Blue Hens won this game 6-2 over Incarnate Word.
Piening pitched 3.1 innings and gave up seven hits in the win.
Delaware’s Win Streak Hits Eight With 5-3 Win Vs Cleveland State
The Blue Hens would stage a late-game rally as the team would score three runs in the seventh inning to seal a 5-3 comeback win on February 16th.
Piening pitched 1.1 innings and gave up two hits in the win.
UD Winning Streak Extends To 10 Games
The Blue Hens winning streak would go into double digits (10) as the team defeated Quinnipiac 9-3.
Piening pitched three innings, four hits, two runs, two earned runs, one strikeout, and one double in the win.
Delaware Snaps A Two-Game Losing Streak With 9-1 Vs Lafayette
UD already had a three-run cushion in this game by the fourth inning but the team would add five more runs to their lead in the fifth to get a 9-1 win over Lafayette.
Piening pitched five innings, four hits, one run, six strikeouts, and one double in the win.
UD Wins Third Straight Game
Delaware would score a combined seven runs in the third and fourth innings to seal a dominating 7-2 win against Saint Peters on March 6th.
Piening pitched two innings, three hits, one run, one earned run, one walk, two strikeouts, and one double in the win.
