Wilmington Upsets Post 76-69 To Advance To The CACC Semifinals

The Wilmington University men’s basketball team pulled off an upset on Tuesday as the team defeated the Post University Eagles 76-69 at the Drubner Center. The win means the Wildcats advance to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Semifinals to take on number one seed Jefferson.

This is the first time since the 2014-2015 season, that  WilmU has won a playoff game.

The leading scorer for the Wildcats in the game was redshirt junior guard Danny Walsh who had 28 points.

Three other Wilmington players scored in double digits in the win which they were  redshirt senior guard Jermaine Head (13), redshirt junior guard Kameron Cooper (14) and sophomore forward Jordan Harding (12).

WilmU had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which included points off turnovers (22-12) and fast-break points (2-0).

Wildcats also had the advantage of shooting as well, as the team shot 43.9% (25-57) and the Eagles shot 41.2% (28-68). WilmU also had the advantage from downtown as well as they shot 48.1% (13-27) and Post shot 23.3% (7-30).

Wilmington did not take their time at the free-throw line for granted as the team shot 92.9% (13-14). The Eagles shot 42.9% (6-14) at the free-throw line in the game.

Wildcats Hold A 13 Point Lead At The Half

The leading scorer for the Wildcats in the first half was Danny Walsh who had 17 points. As a team, Wilmington shot 43.3% (13-30) in the first half and they also shot 83.3% (5-6) at the free-throw line.

Post shot 37.5% (12-32) in the first half and the team also shot 21.4% (3-14) at the three-point line.

Wilmington won the turnover battle in the first half by 6-10.

In the first seven minutes of this game, it was a tight affair as there were six lead changes and two times where the score was tied. At the 13:25 minute mark, Post would lead 11-10 but it would be a short-lived lead as Wilmington came roaring back with a 13-2 run which gave the team a 24-13 lead with 9:10 left in the half.

Danny Walsh was the leader of the 13-2 run as he scored nine of the 13 points. Walsh made three consecutive shots from the perimeter on the run.

Starting at the 2:10 minute mark, Wilmington would go on a 7-0 run to push their lead to 40-27 at the half.

Post Charges Back In Second Half But Wildcats Pulls Off The Upset Win

The leading scorer for the Wildcats in the second half was Danny Walsh as he had 11 points. Walsh’s teammate, Jermaine Head was right behind him as he scored 10 points in the half.

Wilmington shot 44.4% (12-27) in the second half and the team also shot 100.0% (8-8) at the free-throw line.

The Eagles shot 43.2% (16-32) in the second half and the team also shot 50.0% (6-12) at the free-throw line.

In the first 11 minutes of the second half, Wilmington outscored Post 19-16 which had their lead at 59-43.

Starting at the 8:32 minute mark, the Eagles would come flying back in this game with a 19-9 run which cut Wilmington’s lead to six (68-62) with 2:55 left in the game.

The Wildcats would outscore Post 8-7 for the rest of the half to hold on to a 76-69 win and advance to the CACC semifinals.

Wilmington takes on #1 seed Jefferson on March 7th at 5 PM ET in Philadelphia.
