The Wesley College men’s basketball team are the Atlantic East Conference Champions as the team defeated the Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins in the Conference Championship 91-88 on Saturday at Wentworth Gymnasium.
The leading scorer of the game for Wesley was senior guard Brian Cameron who scored 30 points.
Three other Wolverines scored in double digits in the win which was sophomore guard Greg Bloodsworth (24), senior guard Mychal Stefanides (12) and senior forward Terrence Braxton (13).
Wesley had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which included points off turnovers (24-13), fast-break points (22-9), assists (15-13), steals (7-4), blocks (2-0) and turnovers (10-17).
The Wolverines also held the advantage at the free-throw line with the team having a 39.3% shooting percentage (11-28) and with Gwynedd Mercy having a 31.3% (5-16) shooting percentage.
Wesley Leads By Six At The Half
The leading scorer for the Wolverines in the first half was Greg Bloodsworth who had 11 points. As a team, Wesley shot 38.7 % (12-31) in the first half and they also shot 64.3 % (9-14) at the free-throw line.
The Griffins shot 57.7 % (15-27) in the first half and the team also shot 50.0 % (1-2) at the free-throw line.
The game started with Gwynedd Mercy jumping out to a quick 9-3 lead which would balloon to an 11-4 at the 15:59 minute mark.
The Griffins would have a 25-16 lead with 8:56 left in the half but about a minute later Wesley would start an on 16-7 run which gave the team their first lead of the game (35-32) with 1:43 left in the first. Brian Cameron and Greg Bloodsworth were the leaders on the run as they each scored five of the 16 points.
At the 1:02 minute mark, the Wolverines would make three consecutive free throw shots to extend their lead at the half to 38-32.
Wolverines Shooting Improves Which Helps Them Become The Champs
The leading scorer for the Wolverines in the second half was Brian Cameron with 22 points. Wesley’s vision of the basket greatly improved in the second half, as the team shot 55.2 % (16-29). The Wolverines also shot 68.2 % (15-22) at the free-throw line in the second half.
The Griffins shot 62.1 % (18-29) in the second half and the team also shot 69.6 % (16-23) at the free-throw line.
The second half started with Wesley going on a 15-8 run which pushed their lead to 53-40 with 15:29 left in the game. Brian Cameron was the leader of the 15-8 run as he scored nine of the 15 points.
Starting at the 4:43 minute mark, Gwynedd Mercy would outscore the Wolverines 19-13 for the rest of the half but it would not matter as Wesley would hang on to win 91-88. The Wolverines made 10 shots from the free-throw line during that time span.
The 91-88 win would mean that Wesley College’s men basketball team are the new kings of the Atlantic East Conference.
