The Wesley College men’s basketball team defeated the Gwynedd Mercy University Griffins 76-73 on Wednesday at Wentworth Gymnasium.
The leading scorer of the game for Wesley was senior guard Brian Cameron who scored 30 points. This is Cameron’s seventh game with scoring 30 plus points.
Two other Wolverines scored in double digits in the win which was sophomore guard Greg Bloodsworth (20) and freshman forward Michael McCants (12).
Wesley had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which included points off turnovers (7-6), fast-break points (14-7), rebounds (42-40), assists (11-9) and blocks (2-1).
The Wolverines also had the advantage of shooting as well, with the team shooting 45.6 %(26-57) and with Gwynedd Mercy shooting 38.2 % (26-68). Wesley also held the advantage at the free-throw line with the team having a 76.9 % shooting percentage (20-26) and with the Griffins having a 57.9 % (11-19) shooting percentage.
Wesley Leads By Two At The Half
The leading scorer in the first half for the Wolverines was Brian Cameron who had 12 points. Cameron’s teammate, Greg Bloodsworth was right behind him with scoring 11 points in the first half.
In the first half, Wesley shot 41.7 % (15-36) and the team also shot 66.7 % (4-6) at the free-throw line.
The Griffins shot 36.1 % (13-36) in the first half and they also shot 100.0 % (4-4) at the free-throw line.
Wesley lost the turnover battle in the first half by 6-4.
The Wolverines started the game with a fire as the team came out roaring out with a 7-2 lead in the early minutes of the first half. The lead was short-lived as Gwynedd Mercy’s Nathaniel Walker would score seven straight points to tie the game up at seven with 16:32 left in the half.
At the 11:35 minute mark, Wesley would start on a 12-5 run which would push their lead to 27-19 with 6:36 left in the first half. Cameron was the leader on this run as he scored five of the 12 points.
About a minute later, The Griffins would go on a 12-2 run which gave the team a 31-29 lead with 2:43 left in the half. In the next minute, Wesley would tie the game at 31 with a Derick Charles layup.
The Wolverines would outscore Gwynedd Mercy 5-3 for the rest of the half to take a 36-34 lead into halftime.
Free-Throws Help Wesley Bring Home Win
The leading scorer for Wesley in the second half was Brian Cameron who had 18 points. As a team, Wesley improved their shooting greatly in the second half as they shot 52.4 % (11-21). The Wolverines also shot 80.0 % (16-20) at the free-throw line.
The Griffins shot 40.6 % (13-32) in the second half and they also shot 46.7 % (7-15) from the free-throw line.
In the first five minutes and change in the second half, there were three tied scores and five lead changes among the two teams. At 14:54 minute mark, the two teams would be tied at 44.
Starting at the 7:17 minute mark, Wesley would outscore the Griffins 10-6 to take a 68-65 lead with 2:50 left in the game. Cameron led the Wolverines on the run as he scored eight of the 10 points.
Starting at the 1:14 minute mark, the Wolverines would hit six free throw shots to seal a 76-73 home win.
Wesley heads on the road to take on Marymount (Va.) on February 1st at 5 PM ET.
