The Delaware State University’s women’s basketball team has now won two straight games as the team defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks 72-58 on Monday at Memorial Hall.
The leading scorer of the game for the Hornets was junior guard Lyric Turner who had 20 points.
Junior guard Janasia Law recorded a double-double in the win as she had 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Senior guard Lanayjha Ashe also scored in double-digits in the game as she had 19 points.
Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which included points off turnovers (18-17), fast-break points (10-6), rebounds (47-39) and assists (12-7).
Hornets also had the advantage of shooting as well, with the team shooting 40.3 % (25-62) and with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore shooting 33.3 % (22-66). Delaware State also bested Hawks at the three-point line as the team shot 38.5 %(10-26) and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore shot 10.0 % (2-20).
Delaware State also took advantage of their time at the free-throw line as the team shot 66.7 % (12-18). The Hawks shot 60.0 % (12-20) at the free-throw line in the game.
DSU Leads By Six After One Quarter
Hornets shot 37.50 % (6-16) in the first quarter and the team also shot 50.00 % (2-4) at the free-throw line.
The first quarter was Maryland Eastern Shore’s worst shooting quarter as the team shot 25.00 % (5-20). The Hawks also shot 100.00 % (1-1) from the free-throw line in the first quarter.
The game started with the Hornets flying out to a 13-0 lead which was led by Lyric Turner who scored six of the thirteen points. Delaware State hit three shots from the perimeter in the run.
The Hawks would outscore DSU 11-4 for the rest of the quarter to cut Delaware State’s lead to 17-11.
Hornets Lead By 13 At Half
DSU had their worst shooting quarter of the game in the second as the team shot 35.29 % (6-17). The Hornets also shot 75.00 % (3-4) from the free-throw line in the second quarter.
Maryland Eastern Shore shot 30.77 % (4-13) in the second quarter and the team also shot 100.00 % (2-2) at the free-throw line.
Starting at the 5:37 minute mark, Delaware State would start on a 13-6 run which would push their lead to 34-21 at the half. Lanayjha Ashe led the Hornets run as she scored eight of the 13 points.
First Half Stats
Hornets were shooting 36.4 % (12-33) in the first half and Hawks was shooting 27.3 %( 9-33).
Delaware State was shooting 62.5 % (5-8 ) from the free-throw line in the first half and the Maryland Eastern Shore 100%(3-3).
The leading scorer for DSU in the first half was Lanayjha Ashe with 13 points.
The leading scorer for the Hawks in the first half was Adrienne Jones with seven points.
DSU Leads By 19 After 13 Quarters
The third quarter was the best shooting quarter of the game for the Hornets who shot 50.00 % (8-16). DSU also shot 66.67 % (4-6) from the free-throw line in the third quarter.
The Hawks shot 35.29 % ( 7-16) in the third quarter and the team also shot 50.00 % (4-8) at the free-throw line.
At the 6:20 minute mark, the Hornets would start a 13-5 run which would extend their lead to 55-32 with 1:53 left in the third quarter. Lyric Turner led the Hornets on that run as she scored eight of the 13 points.
Maryland Eastern Shore would outscore DSU for 6-2 for the rest of the quarter to decrease Delaware State’s lead to 57-38.
Hornets Take Home A 14 Point Win
In the fourth quarter, the Hornets shot 38.46 % (5-13) and the team also shot 75.00 % (3-4) at the free-throw line.
The Hawks would shoot 43.75 % (7-16) in the fourth quarter and they also shot 55.56 % (5-9) at the free-throw line.
Maryland Eastern Shore would outscore DSU 20-15 in the final quarter but the Hornets would still take home a convincing 72-58 win when the buzzer sounded.
Delaware State heads to Virginia to take on Norfolk State on February 8th at 2 PM ET.
