The Goldey-Beacom men’s basketball team have now won two straight games to start the new year as the team won 69-65 on Saturday at the Meyer Athletic Center against the Concordia College Clippers.
Lightning’s leading scorer of the night was sophomore guard Kyle Elliot who had 20 points in the win.
Senior guard Mahir Johnson also scored in double digits in Goldey-Beacom’s win with 19 points.
Sophomore guard Marcellus Livingston had a double-double in the game as he had 15 points and 10 rebounds.
In the first half this game looked like it was going to be a runaway for the Lightning but the Clippers had other plans as they clawed their way back in the second half. Goldey-Beacom hung on but it was definitely a battle at the end.
The biggest strength of the night for Goldey-Beacom was their free throw shooting as they went 17 for 18 in the game.
Goldey-Beacom Jumps Out To A Big Lead In First Half
Goldey-Beacom jumped out to a 42-29 lead in the first half and that was thanks to Kyle Elliot and Marcellus Livingston who both had 12 points in the half.
The team also did very well at the free throw line in the first half with making nine of ten shots.
Concordia College made nine out of 13 shots at the free throw line in the first half.
Goldey-Beacom started the first half by going on a 14-5 run which was led by Marcellus Livingston who had four points and three rebounds in that time span.
The game was tighter around the nine minute mark but that ended very quickly as the Lightning went on a 14-6 run. Goldey-Beacom had a 39-26 lead with 6:07 left in the first half.
The Lightning would end the half with a 42-29 lead over the Clippers.
First Half Stats:
Goldey-Beacom shot 48.5 % in the first half and Concordia College shot 26.5 %.
The Lightning shot 90.0 % at the free throw line and Clippers shot 69.2 %.
Kyle Elliot and Marcellus Livingston were the leading scorers for Goldey-Beacom in the first half with 12 points.
Jayson Cethoute was the leading scoring for Concordia College with eight points.
Turnovers & Shooting Struggles Hurt Goldey-Beacom In the 2nd Half
Goldey-Beacom did not lose the lead in the second half but the team struggled with shooting and turnovers in the half. The Lightning shot 32.0 % in the second half and turned the ball over 14 times which gave an opening for the Clippers to come back in the game.
The Clippers did exactly that as they outscored the Lightning 36-27 in the second half and decreased Goldey-Beacom’s lead down to two points with around a minute left.
In the end, senior guard Troy Stancil and Elliot came through in crunch time with four combined made free throws that gave Goldey-Beacom a 69-65 win.
Goldey-Beacom make to look it three straight wins as they stay on the road to take on Holy Family on January 8th at 7:30pm.
