The Goldey-Beacom women’s basketball team have now won two straight games to start the new year as the team won 58-51 on Saturday at the Meyer Athletic Center against the Concordia College Clippers.
The leading scorer of the game for Goldey-Beacom was sophomore forward Alanna Speaks who had 17 points.
Junior guard Amanda McGrogan had a nice game for the Lightning as she scored 16 points in the win.
One stat that stands out in this game for Goldey-Beacom was that the team had 10 blocks in the game. Freshman forward Vera Lauhaluoma had six of the 10 blocks in the game.
Speaks Score Seven As Lightning’s offense Strikes Early In First Quarter
Goldey-Beacom started off fast in the first quarter by going on a 9-2 run which was led by Alanna Speaks who scored seven points in the run.
The Lightning held the lead the whole quarter despite the Clippers clawing closer to them throughout the quarter.
Goldey-Beacom would end the quarter with a 18-10 lead heading into the second quarter.
McGrogan Scores Five As Lightning’s offense Strikes Late In Second Quarter
In the second quarter, it was the Clippers turn to start a quarter fast and they did just that as the team went on a 7-0 on run to tie the game at 18.
After the Clippers run, Goldey-Beacom went on their own 9-0 run which gave them a 27-18 lead with 3:39 left in the half. Amanda McGrogan led the charge on the run with scoring four points in that time span.
McGrogan would score the last point of the half by making a free throw shot which gave the Lightning a 30-20 lead going into halftime.
First Half Stats
Goldey-Beacom shot 42.9 % in the first half and Concordia College shot 24.1 %.
The Lightning shot 76.9 % at the free throw line and Clippers shot 75.0 %.
The leading scorer for Goldey-Beacom in the first half was Alanna Speaks with 10 points.
The leading scorer for Concordia College in the first half was Sara Hopkins with nine points.
Concordia Claws Back Into The Game In Third Quarter
The story of the third was Concordia getting within three points of the lead at the end of the quarter. The Clippers outscored the Lightning 17-10 in the third quarter.
Lightning Get Hot In The Late Minutes of The Fourth To Pull Out The Win
The Clippers were not playing around as the momentum they had in third was still there in the fourth quarter as they tied the game in the beginning of the quarter with a three pointer by Cameron Corbett.
After that, the two teams would battle back and forth with the lead not staying with either side very long.
Then at the 4:24 minute mark, the game was tied at 48 and Goldey-Beacom went on a little 6-2 run to give them a 54-50 lead with 1:58 left in the game. McGrogan scored four out the six points on the run.
McGrogan would score three more points in the game to lead the Lightning to a 58-51 road win.
Goldey-Beacom makes to look it three straight wins as they stay on the road to take on Holy Family on January 8th at 5:30pm.
