Thomas Farrior Scores 28 In WilmU’s 89-77 Win Over Georgian Court

The Wilmington University Men’s basketball team rang in the new year with a 89-77 win against the Georgian Court University Lions at the Wellness Center Arena on Wednesday.

Senior guard Thomas Farrior was the leading scorer for the Wildcats in the game with 28 points.

Another Wildcat who had a big night was redshirt junior guard Jermaine Head who had 25 points in the win. Head was one rebound away from a double-double as he collected nine.

Freshman forward Jordan Harding also had a nice night for Wilmington as he scored 11 points in the win.

Wilmington started their  Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference part of their schedule with the game with Georgian Court on Wednesday.

WilmU’s Farrior Had The Shooting Touch In First Half

Wilmington’s Thomas Farrior led his team in the first half with 14 points and the rest of team did not shoot too bad as well as Wilmington as a team shot 60% in the half. Georgian Court had 38.9% shooting percentage in the first half. WilmU had the three pointers going down for them as they had 63.6% shooting percentage and the Lions had 26.7% from the three point line.

Another noticeable thing in the first half was the Wildcats spreading the ball around as the team had 14 assists in the first half.

The first half started with Wilmington off to a quick 9-4 lead which Thomas Farrior scored four of those nine points for his team.

At the 15:36 minute mark, Georgian Court took a 12-11 over WilmU with  Kristian Alexander hitting a jump shot behind three point line.

The lead did not last long as in the next minute, Wilmington went on a 7-2 run which made the score 18-14 in favor of the Wildcats.

The next couple of minutes, the two teams would battle back and forth with the defenses not letting either one score with the game tied at 20.

Around the 10 minute mark, Wilmington decided it was done letting the Lions hang around and the team went on a 12-0 run which put the score at 32-20 with 8:54 left in the half. The Wildcats hit four three point shots in that run.

The Lions would outscore the Wildcats 16 to 12 to end the first half but Wilmington still held a 44-36 lead.

First Half Stats:

Wilmington shot 60% in the first half and Georgian Court shot 38.9%.

WilmU shot 63.6% from the three point line and the Lions shot 26.7%.

Wildcats had 12 rebounds ( all defensive)  in the first half and Georgian Court had 22 rebounds ( 12 defensive and 10 offensive).

Thomas Farrior was the leading scorer for the Wildcats with 14 points in the first half.

Caleb Bowser was the leading scorer for the Lions with 20 points in the first half.

 

Wilmington Struggles with Shooting but Causes 12 Turnovers For the Lions

In the second half, Wilmington did not really shoot the ball well at all as the team had  a 37.8% shooting percentage in the half. WilmU did take advantage of their time at the foul line as they shot 78.9% there. Georgian Court had 51.7% shooting percentage in the second half and the Lions shot 62.5% at the foul line.

Jermaine Head led the Wildcats in scoring in the second half with 19 points.

The tool that gave Wilmington the win in the second half was their defense as the team caused the Lions to turn over the ball 12 times in the half. The Wildcats had five steals, two blocks and 11 defensive rebounds ( 17 overall rebounds) in the second half.

In the beginning of the second half, the Wildcats went on a 8-0 run which Head had four points and one rebound in that run. The 8-0 run increased Wilmington’s lead to 59-47 with 13:19 left in the game.

The last big run of the game happened around the 2:20 minute mark where Wilmington went on 10-5 run. WilmU’s Head had nine points in the run and scored the last two points of the game to seal Wilmington’s 89-77 victory.

Wilmington heads back home to take on Nyack on January 5th at 3:00pm ET.
