The Wilmington University Women’s basketball team rang in the new year with a 84-81 win against Georgian Court University Lions at the Wellness Center Arena on Wednesday.
The leading scorer for the Wildcats was graduate student guard Macy Robinson who had 28 points in the win.
Senior forward Nyree Grant had a big game in Wilmington’s win as she had 24 points and 10 rebounds.
Sophomore forward Jadyn Whitsitt joined Grant and Robinson in scoring in double digits with 16 points.
Wilmington started their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference part of their schedule with the game with Georgian Court on Wednesday.
WilmU’s Robinson Was On Fire From Three Point Range In First Quarter
In the first quarter, Wilmington’s Macy Robinson was a shooting machine from the three point line as she hit three of four shots she attempted there. Robinson also led the team in scoring in the first quarter with 11 points.
Wildcats out rebounded Georgian Court 11 to 5 in the first quarter as well.
The first quarter started with Georgian Court going on a 5-0 run which was thanks to Safiyyah Lee hitting a jump shot and a three pointer.
The Wildcats made it a game at the 7:11 minute mark when Robinson hit a three pointer to tie the game up at seven.
The lead went back and forth between the two teams for a couple minutes until Robinson hit another three point shot to put Wilmington up 10-9 with 5:59 left in the first quarter.
The Wildcats lead throughout most of the quarter was under four points that was until Robinson came back and hit another three pointer to put her team up 22-16 with 1:28 left in the first quarter.
Wilmington would end the quarter with a 24-18 lead heading into the second quarter.
Whitsitt Leads The Scoring In the Scoring Quarter For The Wildcats
Robinson had 11 points in the first quarter but in second quarter it was her WilmU teammate Jadyn Whitsitt who led the team with 11 points in the quarter.
The second quarter started off with WilmU’s Robinson hitting two free throws and a layup to put her team up 28-18 with 9:00 minutes left in the half.
In the next couple of minutes, Wilmington University outscored the Lions 11-5 to increase their lead to 40-27 with 3:06 left in the half.
Georgian Court would outscore the Wildcats 10-9 as the half ended with WilmU still on top 49-37.
First Half Stats:
Wilmington shot 48% ( 18 out of 37) in the first half and Georgian Court shot 46% ( 15 out of 32).
Wilmington’s leading scorer in the first half was Macy Robinson with 15 points.
Lions leading scorers in the first half was Safiyyah Lee and Destiny Thompson with eight points.
Georgian Court Turns Up The Pressure on WilmU
In the third quarter Georgian Court turned on the pressure on WilmU as the team had six steals and caused seven Wilmington turnovers. The Lions also shot better then WilmU in the third quarter as they had 58.8% shooting percentage (10-17) and Wilmington had 46.2% shooting percentage (6-13).
Wilmington’s Robinson was feeling it in the third quarter as she scored 12 points.
Georgian Court outscored Wilmington 25-20 in the quarter but Wilmington never lost their lead as they went into the fourth quarter with a 69-62 lead.
WilmU Hangs Tough With Lions And Holds On For The Win
In the fourth quarter, it was a repeat of the third which had Georgian Court shooting better then Wilmington. The Lions shot 43.8% (7-16) and Wilmington shot 35.7% (5-14) in the quarter. Georgian Court’s defense made sure WilmU’s offense would not get any second chances on any shots as they collected 10 defensive rebounds ( 12 overall rebounds).
WilmU’s Whitsitt would add the last points in the quarter that would seal the game with a 84-81 score.
WilmU heads back home to take on Nyack on January 5th at 1 pm ET.
