Ryan Allen Gets Hot In Overtime to Lead Blue Hens to A 82-80 Double OT Win Vs Northeastern

The University of Delaware men’s basketball team bounced back from their embarrassing loss on Friday against Hofstra with  a double overtime win against the Northeastern Huskies on Sunday at the Matthews Arena.

This is the Blue Hens first Colonial Athletic Association conference win this season.

Freshman guard Ithiel Horton was the Hens leading scorer of the night with 27 points.

Another guard that had a nice night for the Blue Hens was sophomore Ryan Allen who had 19 points in the game. 11 of those 19 points came in a crucial point of the game which was overtime.

One Blue Hen had a double-double on the night and that was redshirt senior forward Eric Carter who had 18 points and 10 rebounds in the win.

Delaware’s bench had a strong showing in the win with them outscoring Northeastern’s bench 32-11.

 

Huskies Out Shoot Blue Hens In the First Half

Northeastern did not have too many problems shooting in the first half as the team had a 54.2 % shooting percentage ( 13-24). Huskies also did well at the three point line with a 55.9% shooting percentage (5-9) and had a 100% shooting percentage (3-3)  at the foul line.

The Blue Hens were a different story as they shot 36%  (9-25) and had 30 % shooting percentage (3-10)  at the three point line. The Hens also had a 61.5% shooting percentage (8-13) at the foul line.

Even with the big difference in efficiency of shooting, the Hens were only down by five in the first half.

The first half started with the Huskies going on a 8-2 run where Brace Bolden hit two three point shots in a row.

Around the five minute mark, it started to look like this game might turn into a blow out as Northeastern was leading 27-15 but the Hens were not giving up just yet.

The Blue Hens would go on a 13-2 run to decrease Northeastern’s lead to 29-28 with 2:02 remaining in the first half. Ithiel Horton and Eric Carter came up big for the Hens during the run with Horton scoring six points and Carter scoring seven points.

The half would end with the Huskies leading the Blue Hens 34-29.

 

First Half Stats:

Hens had shot 36%  (9-25) in the first half and the Huskies shot 54.2 % ( 13-24).

Blue Hens had a 30 % shooting percentage (3-10)  at the three point line and Northeastern had a 55.9% shooting percentage (5-9).

Eric Carter was the leading scorer for the Blue Hens in the first half with 15 points.

Brace Bolden was the leading scorer for the Huskies in the first half with 12 points.

 

Blue Hens Flip the Script In Second Half

The Hens struggled shooting the ball in the first half but team flipped the script when the second half came as they were the ones shooting well and the Huskies struggled to find good shots.

The Hens shot 54.2% ( 13-24) in the second half and had a 50% shooting percentage (5-10) at the three point line. The Hens also hit 80% ( 4-5) of their shots at the foul line in the second half.

The Huskies had a 39.1% shooting percentage ( 9-23) and shot 30% (3-10) at the three point line. Huskies also hit 64.3% (9-14) of their foul shots in the second half.

In the second half, the two teams battled for the lead as it switched often and the biggest lead was six points ( Northeastern) in the half.

The second half would end with Blue Hens Carter making a layup with 17 seconds left to tie the game at 64.

 

Overtime #1

The overtime started with the Hens leading by four but it did not last for long as Northeastern tied the game up at 68 with 2:19 left. Then, in the last minute the lead would go back and forth between the teams until Hens Carter hit a free throw to tie the game at 71. Carter’s made free throw meant the game was heading to double overtime.

 

Blue Hens Allen Scores Seven To Lead Hens To Victory

The second overtime was also a back and forth affair but Hens Ryan Allen was a man on a mission and was determined to get his team a win.

Allen scored 11 points in overtime and seven in the second overtime alone.

The Blue Hen guard would seal the win with making a free throw with a second left on the the clock which made the score 82-80.

Blue Hens look to get back to back wins as the team travels back home to take on William & Mary on January 3rd. Tip off is at 7:00 pm ET.
