The Goldey-Beacom College Men’s basketball team rang in the new year with a 71-66 win over the Chestnut Hill College Griffins on Wednesday at the Joseph West Jones Center.
The leading scorer for Goldy-Beacom in the game was junior forward Dwayne Dixon who had 20 points in the win.
Sophomore guard Kyle Elliot had a nice night for the Lightning as he scored 16 points.
Senior guard Mahir Johnson joined his teammates Dixon and Elliot in scoring in double digits with 13 points.
Goldey-Beacom’s senior guard Corey Taite had nine points in the game but he also broke the school career field goal record in the win. Taite broke the record with 456 field goals as the previous mark was 452 which was set by Sam McDuffie.
The Lightning dominated the Griffins with points off of turnovers as Goldey-Beacom turned in 31 points off Chestnut Hill’s turnovers. Chestnut Hill scored 15 points off Goldey-Beacom’s turnovers.
Goldey-Beacom had the fast break working in the win as they had 20 points from the fast break.
Lightning Forces 13 Griffins Turnovers In The First Half
The Lightning dominated in the first half as they outscored the Griffins 40-28 in the half and that was thanks to all the turnovers the team forced.
The Griffins had 13 turnovers in the half and did not shoot the ball all the well with 40.0 %.
Goldey-Beacom had only five turnovers and the team had a 42.1 % shooting percentage in the first half.
In the early part of the game, it was a back and forth battle between the two teams that was until the 10:16 minute mark where Goldey-Beacom took control of the game.
The Lightning went on 15-0 run which had them take a 27-16 lead with 7:06 left in the first half. Dwayne Dixon led the charge on the run with scoring six out of the 15 points on the run.
Goldey-Beacom would end the half on a made Corey Taite jump shot which increased their lead to 40-28.
First Half Stats:
Goldey Beacom shot 42.1 % in the first half and Chestnut Hill shot 40.0 %.
Lightning had five turnovers in the half and Chestnut Hill had 13.
Goldey-Beacom’s leading scorer in the first half was Dwayne Dixon with 20 points.
Griffins leading scorers in the first half was Amir Warrick and Juston Bailey who had seven points.
Goldey-Beacom’s Defense Came Through for Them In the Second Half
Goldey-Beacom’s defense made sure there was no chance of a comeback for Chestnut Hill in the second half as the Lightning had two blocks, six steals, 11 defensive rebound ( 15 overall rebounds) and caused 11 Griffins turnovers.
The Lighting defense had Chestnut Hill shooting 44.8 % in the second half. Goldey-Beacom shot 54.5 % in the second half of the game.
In the last seven minutes of the half, Chestnut Hill outscored Goldey-Beacom 20-15 but Lightning still hung on to win the game 83-63.
Goldey-Beacom travels to Bronxville, New York to take on Concordia (NY) on January 5th at 3pm ET.
