Wilmington University sweeps Georgian Court to be crowned CACC CHAMPIONS!

The Wilmington University softball team is the 2023 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Champions after sweeping the Georgian Court University Lions on Saturday. The Wildcats won 7-3 in the first game and 3-0 in the second. The victory also earns WilmU an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II East Regional Championship. Saturday’s win marks the fourth time in program history that Wilmington has brought home the CACC title and the first since 2019.

Game One Leaders:

RBIs: Sara Miller, Tristyn Stewart, Cassidy Zelano, and Haley Downin would lead the team in RBIs with one in the win.

Runs:  Taylor Gillis also led the team in runs, with two in the game.

Hits: Gillis, Lexi Moore, and Miller would lead the team in hits, with two in the win.

Game One Recap:

Georgian Court would get the scoring started in this game as Savannah Simons hit an RBI double to right field to give her team a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning.

In the top of the third inning, the Lions would continue to cushion their edge, as Jayda Jones would hit a two-run homer to take the score to 3-0.

Wilmington would finally get on the board in the fourth inning, as the team scored six runs on five hits and three errors to grab a 6-3 lead.

Sophomore outfielder/catcher Tristyn Stewart,  junior pitcher/second baseman Haley Downin, and freshman infielder Cassidy Zelano all batted in a run by hitting an RBI single in the inning.

Junior outfielder Isabella Eleazar and Sophomore outfielder Taylor Gillis would each score a run from a error by Georgian Court.

Lastly, Sophomore outfielder Gabriella Saucedo would push in a run when she was able to reach base by a fielder’s choice.

Two innings later,  junior third baseman/outfielder Sara Miller would hit an RBI single through the left side of the field to extend WilmU’s advantage to 7-3.

The Wildcats’ pitching would do the rest in the top of the seventh inning to seal a 7-3 victory over the Lions.

Pitching recap:

Redshirt sophomore pitcher Delani Sheehan went seven innings, gave up six hits, three runs, three earned runs, three walks, struck out four batters, gave up one home run, and earned the win.
