Wilmington University earns a split versus Dominican (NY)

The Wilmington University baseball team picked up a split on Wednesday in a doubleheader versus the Dominican (NY) University Chargers. WilmU won the first game 7-2 and lost the second 3-2.

Game Leaders:

RBIs: Nick Nocella would lead the team in RBIs with three in the win.

Runs: Erik Grady also led the team in runs, with two in the game.

Hits: Grady and Nocella would lead the team in hits with two in the win.

Home runs: Nick Nocella, Eddie Parry, and Shawn Haut each hit a home run in the game.

Stolen bases: Erik Grady and Jack McDonald would lead the team in stolen bases with two.

Game Recap:

Wilmington would get the scoring started with a bang in this game as junior outfielder Nick Nocella, Senior utility player Eddie Parry, and junior third baseman Shawn Haut hit back to back to back solo home runs in the second inning to give their team 3-0 lead.

The Wildcats would push two more runs in the top of the third inning when Nocella hit an RBI single, and Parry would get a baserunner home on a sacrifice fly to take the score to 5-0.

Two innings later, WilmU would continue to cushion their lead as the team scored two runs on three hits to push the score to 7-0.

The first run in the top of the fifth inning came when freshman infielder Tyler Pirrung slapped an RBI single to left field to extend the team’s edge to 6-0.

Nick Nocella would continue his nice day at the plate, as he pushed in a run when he flew out to the center field to expand Wilmington’s advantage to 7-0.

The Chargers would score two late runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Wildcats would hang on to win 7-2.

Pitching recap:

Junior pitcher Matt Warrington had the Dominican hitters confused all day, as he went six innings, gave up two hits, one walk, struck out nine batters, and earned the win.

Senior pitcher Rich Albrecht would relieve Warrington by going one inning, giving up one hit, two runs, one earned run, two walks, and striking one batter out.
