CACC Tournament: Wilmington University hangs on for a 3-2 win over Bridgeport

The Wilmington University softball team is advancing to the winner’s bracket after defeating the University of Bridgeport Purple Knights 3-2 in the CACC tournament on Thursday.

Game Leaders:

RBIs: Sara Miller would lead the team in RBIs with two in the win.

Runs:  Taylor Gillis,  Lexi Moore, and Haley Downin also led the team in runs, with one in the game.

Hits: Gillis, Downin, Moore, Miller, Gabriella Saucedo, and Tristyn Stewart would lead the team in hits, with one in the win.

Stolen Bases: Lexi Moore would lead the team in stolen bases, with one in the win.

Game Recap:

Wilmington would get the scoring started in this game as the team would get two runs on two hits and one error in the bottom of the first inning.

 Junior third baseman/outfielder Sara Miller and sophomore outfielder Gabriella Saucedo would each push in a run in the first inning when they reached on base from a fielder’s choice to take the score to 2-0.

Fast forward to the fifth inning, Miller would continue to get baserunners home for the Wildcats, as she hit an RBI single up the middle to give her team a 3-0 lead.

Bridgeport would score two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but WilmU would hang on to win 3-2.

Pitching recap:

Sophomore pitcher Kylee Gunkel went four innings, gave up five hits, struck out four batters, and earned the win.

Redshirt sophomore pitcher Delani Sheehan relieved Gunkel as she went three innings, gave up one hit, two runs, struck out three batters, and earned the save.
