CACC Tournament: Wilmington University’s pitching dominates in a 6-0 first-round win over Goldey-Beacom

The Wilmington University softball team is advancing to the double-elimination portion of the CACC Tournament after defeating in-state rival Goldey-Beacom 6-0 in the first round on Saturday.

Game Leaders:

RBIs: Taylor Gillis and Tristyn Stewart would lead the team in RBIs, with two in the win.

Runs:  Miller, Haley Downin, Isabella Eleazar, Danielle Hess, Cassidy Zelano, and Tristyn Stewart also led the team in runs, with one in the game.

Hits: Eleazar would lead the team in hits, with two in the win.

Home Runs: Sara Miller hit a home run in the game.

Stolen Bases: Lexi Moore would lead the team in stolen bases, with one in the win.

Game Recap:

Wilmington would get the scoring started in this game as the sophomore outfielder/catcher Tristyn Stewart  would hit a two-out, two-run double down the left-field line to give her team a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning.

In the bottom of the third inning, junior third baseman/outfielder Sara Miller would add another run to the scoreboard with one swing, as she hit a two-out, solo home run to right center field to push the Wildcats edge to 3-0.

Fast forward to the bottom of the sixth inning, where WilmU continued to cushion their lead, as the team scored three runs on one hit and one error.

The first run of the sixth inning came home when junior infielder Danielle Hess scored on a wild pitch to take the score to 4-0.

Sophomore outfielder Taylor Gillis would be the next batter up, as she slapped a two-run double to left field to give the Wildcats a 6-0 advantage.

Wilmington’s pitching would do the rest to seal a 6-0 victory over the Lightning.

Pitching recap:

Sophomore pitcher Kylee Gunkel had all the right stuff in this outing, as she went five innings, gave up one hit, struck out three batters, and earned the win.

Redshirt sophomore pitcher Delani Sheehan relieved Gunkel as she went two innings, struck out six batters, and earned the save.
