Blue Hens kick off 2021 with a 70-67 win vs the College of Charleston

Hens up by ten at the half

The game started with Delaware charging out to an 8-0 lead with 15:29 left in the first half. Rebounding was a key on the 8-0 run as the Blue Hens had seven rebounds.

The College of Charleston was not going to let Delaware have all the fun as the team went on a 15-9 run of their own around the 14:46 minute mark to cut the lead to two points (17-15) with 6:54 left in the first half.

At the 6:31 minute mark, the Hens would answer back with a 16-8 run of their own, which gave the team a 33-23 lead at the end of the first half. The duo of Gianmarco Arletti and Dylan Painter would score 14 of the 16 points on the run. Rebounding would once again be a key on Delaware’s run as the team collected five rebounds.

Blue Hens hang on to win by three points

The second half started with the Cougars outscoring the Blue Hens 18-12, which would cut the lead to four points (45-41) with 13:33 left in the game. During those seven minutes, Delaware’s aggressiveness would get them seven fouls, which gave the College of Charleston seven points from the free-throw line.

Starting at the 13:15 minute mark, the Hens would get on a little roll by outscoring the Cougars 13-8, which extended the lead to 58-49 with 8:24 left in the second half. Free throw shooting was a key on this run as the Blue Hens scored five of their 13 points at the free-throw line.

At the 7:59 minute mark, the College of Charleston would start inching closer to the lead with a 12-4 run, which cut the lead to one point (62-61) with 1:49 left in the game.

Seconds later, Delaware would outscore the Cougars 5-2 to expand their lead to 67-63 with 34 seconds left in the game. Three of the five points on the run came from the free-throw line.

In the next 15 seconds, the College of Charleston would outscore Delaware 4-1, which cut the lead to one point (68-67) with eight seconds left in the game. Two of the four points on the run came from the free-throw line.

Two seconds later, senior guard Ryan Allen would sink two free throws for the Hens, which would seal a 70-67 win over the Cougars.
