Delaware Closes The Regular Season With A 61-57 Win Vs UNCW

The University of Delaware women’s basketball team closed out their regular season with a 61-57 win against the UNCW Seahawks on Saturday at the Bob Carpenter Center.

This win gave the Hens a first-round bye in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament, as the team will face William & Mary at 7:30 p.m on March 12th.

The leading scorer in the game for the Blue Hens was graduate student forward Nicole Enabosi who had 21 points. Enabosi also had a double-double in the game as she had 15 rebounds with her 21 points. The Blue Hen forward also moved in second place in the program’s record book with 1,676 career points.

Two other Blue Hens scored in double digits in the win which they were sophomore guard/forward Jasmine Dickey (14) and senior forward Samone DeFreese (10).

Delaware had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which included points in the paint (40-30), points off of turnovers (11-4), fast-break points (10-8) and bench points (13-2), assists (17-7), turnovers (7-18) and steals (8-2).

The Blue Hens also outshot the Seahawks in the win as well, as Delaware had a 40.0 % shooting percentage ( 26-65) and UNCW had a 37.0 % shooting percentage (20-54).

Delaware Trails By Four At The End Of The First

The leading scorer for the Hens in the first quarter was Nicole Enabosi who had three points. The Blue Hens had their worst shooting quarter of the game in the first as the team shot 21.43 % (3-14). Delaware also shot 25.00 % (1-4) at the free-throw line in the first quarter.

UNCW also had their worst shooting quarter in the first as the team shot 25.00 % (4-16). The Seahawks also shot 100.00 % (2-2) at the free-throw line in the first quarter.

It took about four minutes into this game to get the first bucket on the board which came from the Seahawks. Once UNCW had their first bucket, the team went on a little run which gave them a 7-2 lead with 3:27 left in the first quarter.

Starting at the 1:55 minute mark, Delaware would outscore UNCW 5-4 to cut the lead to 11-7 going into the second quarter.

Turnovers Hurt Seahawks But Help Delaware Take A Small Lead Into Half

The leading scorer for the Hens in the second quarter was redshirt junior guard Kayla Shaw who had seven points. As a team, Delaware shot 38.89 % (7-18) in the second quarter and they also shot 20.00 % (1-5) at the free-throw line.

The Seahawks shot 30.77 % (4-13) in the second quarter and they also shot 50.00 % (1-2) at the free-throw line.

The Blue Hens won the turnover battle in the second quarter by 2-11.

The second quarter started with the Blue Hens going on an 11-4 run which gave the team a 18-15 lead with 4:45 left in the half. The leader of this run was Kayla Shaw who had seven of the 11 points.

Starting at the 4:22 minute mark, the Seahawks would outscore the Hens 6-4 for the rest of the quarter to cut Delaware’s lead to one point (22-21) at the half.

UNCW Leads By One At The End Of The Third 

The leading scorer for the Hens in the third quarter was Nicole Enabosi who had nine points. As a team, the Blue Hens shot 41.18 % (7-17) in the third quarter and they also shot 75.00 % (3-4) at the free-throw line.

UNCW had its best shooting percentage of the game in the third quarter, as the team shot 58.33 % (7-12). The Seahawks also shot 100.00 % (4-4) at the free-throw line in the third quarter.

Delaware was outrebounded by UNCW 13-3 in the third quarter.

In the first five minutes of the third quarter, the Hens outscored the Seahawks to push their lead to 30-27.

Starting at the 4:04 minute mark, the two teams would bring the intensity of this game even higher as there would be seven lead changes and five times that score was tied to end the quarter. The Seahawks would take a 40-39 lead into the fourth quarter.

Hens Shooting Gets Hot In Fourth To Seal Win

The leading scorer for the Hens in the fourth quarter was Samone DeFreese who had 10 points. Delaware had their best shooting quarter of the game in the fourth, as the team shot 56.25 % (9-16). The Hens also shot 66.67 % (4-6) at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

UNCW shot 38.46 % (5-13) in the fourth quarter and the team also shot 66.67 % (6-9) at the free-throw line.

In the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, the Seahawks would outscore the Hens 11-10 to push their lead to 51-49.

At the 4:02 minute mark, Delaware would start on a 9-3 run which gave the team a 58-54 lead with 48 seconds left in the game. Jasmine Dickey was the leader of this run as she scored four of the nine points.

The Blue Hens would make three consecutive free throw shots to seal their 61-57 win over UNCW.

The Hens take on William & Mary in the CAA Tournament quarterfinals on March 12th at 7:30 PM ET.
