Wesley Rings In The New Year With A 90-83 Win Vs Cairn

The Wesley College men’s basketball team brought in the new year with a 90-83 win over the Cairn University Highlanders on Friday at the Jim & Shirley Wentworth Gymnasium.

The leading scorer of the game for Wesley was senior guard Brian Cameron who scored 36 points. This is the third time this season Cameron has scored 30-plus points in a game. Cameron also has two games scoring over 40-plus points this season.

Two other Wesley players scored in double digits and they were sophomore guard Greg Bloodsworth (22) and freshman forward Michael McCants (10).

Wesley had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which included points from turnovers (12-8), second-chance points (16-15), assists (11-9) and turnovers (5-9).

The Wolverines also had the advantage when it came to three-point shooting as the team shot 52.6 % (10-19) and Cairn shot 25.0 % (3-12).

Wolverines Battle Back In The Late Minutes Of The First Half To End Half In A Tie

In the first half, Wesley shot 40.54 % (15-37) and the team also shot 53.85 % (7-13) from three-point range.

The Highlanders found their sweet spot in the first half as the team shot 54.55 % (18-33) and they also shot 28.57 % (2-7) from three-point range.

The first 11 minutes of this game was a knockout drag out fight which neither team could hold on the lead very long.

At the 8:32 minute mark, Cairn held a 19-15 lead over Wesley which would become a 25-19 lead a couple minutes later, after the team scored six points.

Wesley would tie the game up at 27 with 4:45 left in the half which was thanks to an 8-2 run. Brian Cameron was the leading man on that run as he scored six of the eight points.

Just like, in the beginning, it would be a battle for the lead as each team scored 13 points to end the half with a 40-40 tie.

First Half Stats

Wesley shot 40.54 % (15-37) in the first half and Cairn shot 54.55 % (18-33).

Wolverines shot 53.85 % (7-13) at the free-throw line and the Highlanders shot 28.57 % (2-7).

Wesley Tamps Down Cairn’s Shooting And Takes Home A Seven-Point Win

The Wolverines improved their shooting in the second half as the team shot 47.22 % (17-36) and shot 59.09 % (13-22) at the free-throw line.

Wesley made the necessary adjustments in the second half to slow down Cairn’s shooting as the team shot 45.16 % (14-31). The Highlanders also shot 66.67 % (14-21) from the free-throw line.

The second half started with Wesley going on an 11-5 run which gave the team a 51-45 lead with 15:41 left in the game.

The Wolverines would hold the lead as the minutes of the game went by but Cairn was not going down without a fight as the team closed the lead to one point with the score being 66-65 at the 8:27 minute mark.

Wesley started to get some breathing room in their lead when the team went on a 5-0 run to push their lead to 75-69 with 06:38 left in the game.

The Wolverines would outscore the Highlanders 15-12 for the rest of the game to take home a 90-83 win as the final buzzer sounded.

Wesley stays at home to take on Marymount (Va.) on January 8th at 8 PM ET.
