The Delaware State women’s basketball team won their fourth game of the season on Saturday, as the team defeated the Saint Peter’s University Peacocks at Memorial Hall.
The leading scorer of the game for the Hornets was junior guard/forward Sharajah Collins with 25 points.
Two other Delaware State players scored in double digits which they were junior guard Lyric Turner (19) and junior guard Miajah Bullock (12).
Junior forward Melissa Sam was a rebounding machine in the win with 10 rebounds in the game.
Delaware State had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which included points in the paint (46-36), points off turnovers (23-14),second-chance points (15-14), rebounds (42-27), assists (19-11) and turnovers (18-19).
Hornets also had the advantage of shooting as well, with the team shooting 51.5 % (35-68) and with the Peacocks shooting 42.4 % ( 25-59). Delaware State also bested Saint Peter’s at the three-point line as the team shot 43.8 %(7-16) and the Peacocks shot 17.6 % (3-17).
DSU Holds A Seven Point Lead After One Quarter
In the first quarter, the Hornets shot 44.44 % (8-18) and the team also shot 41.67 % (5-12) at the free-throw line.
The Peacocks shot 31.25 % (5-16) in the first quarter and the team also shot 100.00 % (6-6) from the free-throw line.
DSU came out fast in the first quarter as the team went on a 15-0 run to start the game. The leader on that run was Sharajah Collins as she scored seven of the 15 points.
At the 3:40 minute mark, the Peacocks would go on a 9-0 run to decrease the Hornets lead to three with the score bring 18-15 with 1:15 left in the quarter.
Delaware State would outscore Saint Peter’s 6-3 for the rest of the quarter to take a 24-17 lead.
Hornets Take A 13 Point Lead To The Half
The Hornets had their best shooting percentage in the second quarter as the team shot 58.82 % (10-17) and they also shot 0.00 % (0-2) from the three-point line.
Saint Peters shooting greatly improved in the second quarter as the team shot 45.45 % (5-11) and 50.00 % (2-4) from the three-point line.
The third quarter started with Delaware State going on a 12-6 run which was led by Sharajah Collins who scored four of the 12 points. The 12-6 run gave the Hornets a 36-23 lead with 4:26 left in the half.
The Peacocks would outscore DSU 8-6 for the rest of the quarter but the Hornets would still have a 44-31 lead going into halftime.
First Half Stats
Hornets were shooting 51.42% (18-35) in the first half and Peacocks was shooting 37.03( 10-27).
Delaware State was shooting 41.67 % (5-12 ) from the free-throw line in the first half and the Saint Peters 100%(8-8).
Hornets Widen Their Lead To 27
In the third quarter, the Hornets shot 50.00 % (10-20) and they also shot 66.67 % (6-9) from the three-point line.
Saint Peters shot 45.45 % (5-11) in the third quarter and they also shot 100.00 % (2-2) at the free-throw line.
The Hornets opened up the quarter outscoring the Peacocks 12-7 which expanded their lead to 56-38 with 5:26 left in third. Lyric Turner led the charge on this run by scoring eight of the 12 points.
About a minute later, DSU was back at again, this time starting an 18-7 run which gave the team a 72-45 lead after three-quarters of play.Miajah Bullock was the leading Hornet on that drive as she scored four of the 18 points.
DSU Takes Home A 23 Point Win
The Hornets would shoot 53.85 % (7-13) in the third quarter and they also shot 50.00 % (2-4) from the three-point line.
The Peacocks had their best shooting percentage in the fourth quarter, as the team shot 52.94 % (9-14). Saint Peters also shot 60.00 % (3-5) from the free-throw line in the third quarter.
The quarter started with the Hornets going on a 7-2 run which pushed their lead to 79-47 with 8:19 left in the game.Sharajah Collins led the charge on the run by scoring five of the seven points.
At 7:30 minute mark, Saint Peters tried to dig themselves out of the huge deficit facing them, as the team went on a 12-5 run which cut DSU’s lead to 84-61 with 2:28 left in the game.
Both teams would score five points each for the rest of the quarter but Delaware State would easily win this game with a score of 89-66.
Hornets travel to Virginia to take on Longwood on December 15th at 3 PM ET.
