Wildcats Defeat Adelphi & Franklin Pierce, Earn Spot In NCAA DII East 1 Regional Final

The Wilmington University baseball team has earned a spot in the NCAA Division II East 1 Regional Finals after defeating the Adelphi Panthers 14-5 and Franklin Pierce Ravens 12-10 on Friday.

Game One ( Won 14-5 vs Adelphi)

As runs batted in ( RBIs) goes, there was five Wilmington hitters who hit RBIs and they were senior right fielder Dakota Graham (2), redshirt sophomore right fielder Quintin Ivy (1), senior first baseman Kendall Small (5),redshirt junior left fielder Eddie Nevins (1) and senior catcher Frank Nigro (1).

Eight WilmU players had runs in the win and they were Graham (2), Ivy (3), Small (1),Nevins (1),  redshirt junior DH Brooks Ryan (2), redshirt senior second baseman Max Carney (1), redshirt junior shortstop Dan Hyatt (2) and redshirt sophomore third baseman Brett Nowell (2).

Eight Wilmington hitters gained a hit in the win and they were Graham (2),Ivy (2), Small (3),Nevins (1),  Ryan (1), Carney (1), Hyatt (1) and  Nowell (2).

Quintin Ivy (1) and Kendall Small (1) each hit a home run in the 14-5 win over Adelphi.

Dakota Graham recorded a stolen base in the win.

On the pitching side, the waters were rough in the beginning for this pitching staff but as the game went on the team was surfing through the game easily.

Wildcats starter redshirt senior Sean Deely had a pretty rough outing, as he went five innings, 11 hits, five runs, five earned runs, two walks,seven strikeouts, one home run and earned the win (seventh of the season).

Freshman Danny Sullivan would come into the game and relieve Deely which he dominated in three innings with two hits.

Senior Justin Mears would close out the game for the Wildcats as he went one inning,one walk and two strikeouts.

The Runs Come Fast & Furious In Early Innings

Adelphi would be the first one to get on the scoreboard as the team scored two runs in the top of the first inning.

The runs for Adelphi would come from Michael Cattani who would hit a single to center field which scored Brett Malm and Jonathan Iadevaia to give their team a 2-0 lead.

Wilmington would score their first run in the second inning when Frank Nigro reached first base from an error by Adelphi’s first baseman which allowed Brooks Ryan to score to decrease the deficit to 2-1.

The Wildcats would add two more runs in the third inning and fourth innings to take a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of third inning, the run would come from Quintin Ivy who hit a solo home run to center field which tied the game up at two.

Wildcats would add another run in the bottom of the fourth inning when Dan Hyatt would score on a  throwing error by Adelphi’s center fielder to give Wilmington a 3-2 lead.

The Two Teams Would Score A Combined 10 runs in the Fifth Inning

The two team’s lineups were already hitting pretty well in this game but in the fifth inning, the two colleges bumped it up a level as they combined for 10 runs in the inning.

Adelphi would start the scoring off in the top of the fifth inning, as Brett Malm hit a two run home run to left field to give his team a 4-3 lead.

Panthers next run in the inning would come from Lucas Terwilliger who hit a two out single which scored Tyler Becker to extend their team’s lead to 5-3.

This would be last time the Panthers would score a run in the game.

The Wildcats would answer back in the bottom of the fifth inning in dominating fashion, as the team scored seven runs in the inning.

Wilmington’s first two runs would come from Kendall Small who hit a two run home run to right field which tied the game up at five runs.

Two batters later, Max Carney would reach first base on a throwing error from Adelphi’s pitcher which allowed Brooks Ryan and Eddie Nevins to score to give the Wildcats a 7-5 lead.

Wilmington’s Frank Nigro would get hit by a pitch in the inning which allowed Max Carney to score to extend their team’s lead to 8-5.

The next batter would be Dakota Graham who was walked which allowed Dan Hyatt to score to expand the Wildcats lead to 9-5.

The last score of the inning would come from Small who flied out to left field for a sacrifice fly which allowed Brett Nowell to score to give the Wildcats a 10-5 lead.

Wilmington’s starter Sean Deely battled for five innings as he had 11 hits, five runs, five earned runs, two walks,seven strikeouts, one home run and earned the win.

Wildcats Score A Combined Four Runs In Seventh & Eighth Innings

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Wilmington would add two more runs to their already sizable lead.

The first run of the inning came from Kendall Small who hit a single to left field which allowed Dakota Graham to score to extend the Wildcats lead to 11-5.

The last run of the inning came from Eddie Nevins who flied out to left field for a sacrifice fly which allowed Quintin Ivy to score to give Wilmington a 12-5 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Wildcats would continue to score as Graham hit a single to right field which scored Brett Nowell to extend their team’s lead to 13-5.

The last run of the game for the Wildcats would come from Small who hit a single to the right side of the field which scored Graham to give the Wildcats a 14-5 lead.

Wilmington’s pitcher Danny Sullivan came into the game in the sixth inning for Sean Deely which pitched a dominant three innings with just giving up two hits.

Justin Mears would close out the 14-5 win for the Wildcats as he went one inning,one walk and two strikeouts.

Wildcats will take on NYIT in the NCAA Division II East 1 Regional Finals at 12 PM ET.

Game Two ( 12-10 Win Vs Franklin Pierce)

As runs batted in ( RBIs) goes, there was seven Wilmington hitters who hit RBIs and they were Quintin Ivy (1),Kendall Small (2),Eddie Nevins (5),Brooks Ryan (1),Max Carney (1),senior catcher Luke Johnson (1) and  freshman shortstop Derek Donastorg (1).

Eight WilmU players had runs in the win and they were Dakota Graham (2), Ivy (3), Small (1), Nevins (1), Ryan (1),Johnson (1),Brett Nowell (1) and Donastorg (2).

Nine Wilmington hitters gained a hit in the win and they were Graham (2), Ivy (3),Small (2), Nevins (3),Ryan (1),Johnson (2), Max Carney (1),Brett Nowell (1) and Donastorg (1).

Brooks Ryan (1) and Luke Johnson each hit a home run in the 12-10 win over the Ravens.

Dakota Graham (1) and Quintin Ivy (1) each recorded a stolen base in the win.

On the pitching side, the pitching staff went through quiet a few tough battles in this game but the staff ultimately came out victorious.

Wildcats starter, Dan Hyatt had his battles in this game but was able to last six innings with eight hits,five runs, three earned runs,two walks, six strikeouts and earned the win(10th of the season).

Redshirt senior Zach Frederick would relieve Hyatt as he went zero innings,two hits,two runs,two earned runs and one home run.

Kendall Small would close out the game for the pitching staff, as he went three innings,five hits,three runs, one earned run, three walks, three strikeouts and earned the save ( second of the season).

Wildcats Score A Combine Five Runs In First & Second Innings

The Wildcats were the first team to get on the scoreboard in this game as Eddie Nevins hit a single to left field which would score Quintin Ivy to give their team a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Wilmington would add another four runs to their lead in the second inning, as it started with Derek Donastorg hitting a single to to right field which scored Brett Nowell to increase their team’s lead to 2-0.

The next run would come from Kendall Small who flied out to left field for a sacrifice fly which allowed Donastorg to score to give the Wildcats a 3-0 lead.

The third run in the inning came from Nevins who hit a single through the left side of the field which allowed Ivy and Dakota Graham to score to extend Wilmington’s lead to 5-0.

Franklin Pierce Scores Four Runs In The Fourth Innings

The Wildcats would add one more run to their lead in the fourth inning, as Quintin Ivy hit a single to right field which scored Dakota Graham to give their team a 6-0 lead.

The Ravens would respond in a huge way in the bottom of the fourth, as the team scored four runs to decrease Wilmington’s lead to two runs.

Franklin Pierce’s first run in the inning came from Jethro Hurt who hit a single to the right of center field which scored Jonel Ozuna and Ural Forbes to decrease the Wildcats lead to 6-2.

The next batter in the inning would be James Boria who flied out to right field for a sacrifice fly which allowed  Carmine Giordano to score to decrease Wilmington’s lead to 6-3.

The next score for the Ravens would come from Dylan Jones as he grounded out to the shortstop which allowed Jethro Hurt to score to decrease the Wildcats lead to 6-4.

The Ravens would get another run in the sixth inning from Dylan Jones who would hit a single up the middle which scored James Boria to decrease Wilmington’s lead to 6-5.

The Two Teams Combine For 11 Runs In Seventh & Eighth Innings

In the top of the seventh inning, the Wildcats would add two runs to give some breathing room in their lead.

The first run of the inning came from Brooks Ryan who hit a solo home run to center field which gave the Wildcats a 7-5 lead.

The next run also came from a home run, as Luke Johnson would hit a solo home run to center field to increase Wildcats lead to 8-5.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Ravens would answer right back as the team scored two runs of their own.

Wildcats starting pitcher Dan Hyatt had a interesting day on the mound as he went six innings with eight hits,five runs, three earned runs,two walks, six strikeouts and earned the win.

Zach Frederick would relieve Hyatt as he went zero innings,two hits,two runs,two earned runs and one home run.

The home run that Frederick gave up in the inning was to Ural Forbes which was a two run homer to decrease the Wildcats lead to 8-7.

In the top of the eighth inning, Wildcats would answer back with four more runs to increase their lead to 12-7.

The first run of the inning for the Wildcats came from Kendall Small who hit a single to right field which scored Derek Donastorg to extend their team’s lead to 9-7.

Eddie Nevins would knock in two runs when he hit a single through the left side of the field which scored Small and Quintin Ivy to increase Wilmington’s lead to 11-7.

Max Carney would score the last run of the game for the Wildcats, as he hit a single to right field which scored Nevins to give their team a 12-7 lead.

The Ravens were not giving up this battle just yet, as the team scored three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to decrease Wilmington’s lead to 12-10.

Franklin Pierce’s first run in the inning came from John Mead who would hit a single up the middle which scored Dylan Jones to decrease the Wildcats lead to 12-8.

The next Ravens runs came from a Wilmington error as the second baseman dropped the fly ball which allowed Mead and Brad Roberto to score to decrease Wilmington’s lead to 12-10.

Wilmington’s pitcher Kendall Small came into the game to relieve  Zach Frederick in the sixth inning which for two innings he got pretty banged up. In the ninth inning, Small would seal the win for the Wildcats and their spot in NCAA Division II East 1 Regional Finals with a 12-10 win.

Small went three innings,five hits,three runs, one earned run, three walks, three strikeouts and earned the save.
