The University of Delaware women’s basketball team has now won three straight games with their 70-57 win on Thursday against the Towson University Tigers at SECU Arena.
The leading scorer in the game for the Blue Hens was graduate student Makeda Nicholas who scored 15 points.
Redshirt senior Alison Lewis also scored in double digits in the Blue Hens win as she had 14 points.
Delaware had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which included Assists (14-9), Points in the Paint (20-18), Points off Turnovers (16-11),Second Chance Points ( 16-13) and Bench Points (39-24).
The Blue Hens also won the turnover battle by 16 to 19.
Blue Hens also had the advantage in shooting as well, with the team shooting 39.3 % (24-61) and with the Tigers shooting 30.2 % ( 19-63). Delaware also had the advantage at the three point line as the team shot 35.3 % (6-17) and Towson shot 22.2 % (4-18). The Hens also bested the Tigers from the foul line as well, with the team shooting 80.0 %(16-20) and the Towson shooting 71.4 %(15-21).
Rebounds & Three Pointers Key Factor For Hens Lead In First Quarter
In the first period, the Blue Hens were hitting three pointers at a high rate with a shooting percentage of 60% (3-5). As a team, the Hens shot 38.9% (7-18) overall in the quarter.
Towson shot 35.3% (6-17) in the first quarter and they also shot 50% (2-4) at the three point line.
Hens also out rebounded the Tigers 16-7 in the first quarter.
The game started with the Hens taking a quick 5-2 lead but it did not last long as Towson’s Danielle Durjan hit a three pointer to tie it up at five with 6:14 left in the quarter.
The Tigers then went on 6-0 run to give them a 11-5 lead with 4:27 left in the quarter.
At the 2:58 minute mark, the Blue Hens went on a 10-0 run which gave them a 18-15 lead after one quarter of play.
Blue Hens Defense Steps Up In Second Quarter
The Blue Hens defense did a good job in the second quarter making sure Towson could not find many good looks at the basket. The Tigers shot 18.8% (3-16) in the second quarter and they also shot 50% (1-2) at the foul line.
As a team, Delaware shot 40.0% (6-15) in the second quarter and they also shot 50% (2-4) at the foul line.
The second period started with the Hens going on a 5-0 run which increased their lead to 23-15 with 8:55 left in the quarter.
At the 6:34 minute mark, Delaware went on a 8-2 run which gave them a 33-23 lead at halftime.
First Half Stats
Delaware had 39.4 %(13-33) shooting percentage in the first half and Towson had 27.3 %(9-33).
Blue Hens shot 60.0 % (3-5) from the foul line in the first half and the Tigers shot 40.0 % (2-5.
Hens leading scorer in the first half was Alison Lewis with seven points.
The Tigers leading scorer in the first half was Danielle Durjan with nine points.
Blue Hens Struggle In the Third Quarter & Lose Lead
The Blue Hens came out of halftime off their game as team really struggled to find the basket in the third quarter. As a team, Delaware shot 28.6% (4-14) in the third quarter and they also shot 100% (2-2) at the foul line.
Towson had their best shooting percentage of the game in the third quarter as they shot 46.7% (7-15). The Tigers also shot 77.8% (7-9) at the foul line in the third quarter.
The Tigers also out rebounded the Blue Hens 16-3 in the third quarter.
Towson out scored the Hens 21-10 in the quarter to take a 44-43 lead into the fourth.
Hens Shooting & Defense Improves As They Seal Win In Fourth Qtr
The Blue Hens shook off the slow start in third quarter and came out in the fourth quarter a team playing with a purpose.
The Hens shot their best shooting percentage of the game in the fourth quarter as they shot 50.0% (7-14). Delaware also shot 84.6% (11-13) at the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
The Blue Hens defense stiffened up in the fourth quarter as the team made sure not to give the Tigers too many good looks at the hoop. The Tigers shot 20.0% (3-15) in the fourth quarter and they also shot 85.7% (6-7) at the foul line .
Blue Hens also won the turnover battle in the fourth quarter by 3-6 and out rebounded the Tigers 13-9.
The Hens Bailey Kargo would hit a three pointer at the beginning of the fourth quarter to give her team a 46-44 lead.
The Hens went on a 12-2 run with 3:26 left in the game to give them a 70-57 win over Towson. Delaware hit 10 free throws on that run.
The Blue Hens end their regular season at James Madison on Saturday at 2:00pm ET.
