The Goldey-Beacom men’s basketball team clinched a spot in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Basketball Tournament on Saturday with a 94-83 win against  Dominican College (NY) Chargers.

The leading scorer for the Lightning was senior guard  Mahir Johnson who scored 27 points in the game.

Four other Goldey Beacom players scored in double-digits and they were sophomore guard Marcellus Livingston (25), senior guard Corey Taite (17), senior guard Troy Stancil (11) and sophomore guard Kyle Elliot (10).

Goldey-Beacom had the advantage in multiple categories in the game which included Steals (13-7), Points off Turnovers (21-19) and Bench Points (27-19).

The Lightning also won the turnover battle in the game by 15-17.

Goldey-Beacom also had the advantage in shooting as well, with the team shooting 52.5 % (32-61) and with the Chargers shooting 50.0 % ( 31-61).The Lightning also bested  Dominican  from the three point line as well with the team shooting 70.6 %(12-17) and the Chargers shooting 38.1 %(8-21). Goldey-Beacom also held the advantage at the foul line as well with the team shooting 78.3 % (18-23) and Dominican shooting 65.0 % (13-20).

 

Johnson & Livingston Combine For 23 Points But Lightning Still Trail At Half

The leading scorer for the Lightning in the first half was Mahir Johnson  who scored 12 points. Johnson’s teammate, Marcellus Livingston was right behind him with scoring 25 points in the first half.

As a team, Goldey-Beacom shot 43.8 % (14-32) in the first half and they also shot 77.8 % (7-9) at the foul line. The Lightning also drowned three pointers on a consistent basis with team shooting 50% (4-8).

The Lightning had a tough time stopping the Chargers offense as the team shot 52.9 % (18-34). Dominican also shot 50% (6-12)  from three point line and 61.5 % (8-13) from the foul line.

The Chargers won the turnover battle in the first half by 6-9.

The first half started with the two CACC teams trading blows back and forth with the lead constantly changing.

It was not until the 12:18 minute mark where the game would not be as tight, the Chargers would go on a 11-0 run which gave them a 28-16 lead with 10:15 left in the half.

Goldey-Beacom would outscore Dominican 23-22 but the Lightning would still trail 50-39 at halftime.

First Half Stats

Goldey-Beacom shot 43.8 % (14-32)  in the first half and Dominican shot 52.9 % (18-34).

The Lightning shot 77.8 % (7-9) at the free throw line and the Chargers shot 61.5 % (8-13).

The leading scorer for Goldey-Beacom in the first half was Mahir Johnson with 12 points.

The leading scorer for the Chargers in the first half was Jonathan Garcia with 13 points.

 

Taite, Johnson & Livingston Combine For 44 Points & Help Get Lightning The Win 

The leading scorers in the second half for Goldey-Beacom were Mahir Johnson and Corey Taite who each scored 15 points. Johnson and Taite’s teammate, Marcellus Livingston was right behind them with scoring 14 points in the second half.

In the second half, The Chargers defense could do very little to stop the Lightning’s offense as the team shot 62.1 % (18-29). The Lightning dominated at the three point line in the second half as the team shot 88.9 % (8-9).

The Chargers shooting percentage dipped in the second half as the team shot 46.4 % (13-28) and they also shot 71.4 % (5-7) from the foul line.

The Lightning won the turnover battle in the second half by 6-13.

The second half started with the Chargers going on a 7-4 run which increased their lead to 57-43 with 17:48 left in the game.

The Lightning would answer the Chargers run with a 18-4 run of their own, which tied the game at 61 with 11:20 left in the game.

Goldey-Beacom would go on another run with 10:53 left in the second half where the team outscored the Chargers 13-4 to take a 74-67 lead. The Lightning did well at three point line on that run as the team hit three from downtown.

The Lightning would outscore the Chargers 20-16 for the rest of the half and seal a 94-83 road win.

Goldey-Beacom heads back home to the Joseph West Jones Center to take on University of the Sciences on February 23rd at 3pm ET.
