The University of Delaware men’s basketball team earned their fourth straight win against a CAA opponent on Thursday as they beat UNCW 82-69 at the Trask Coliseum.
Blue Hens freshman guard Ithiel Horton was the leading scorer for the Hens with a career high 31 points. Horton also set a Delaware school record with knocking down nine three pointers in a single game.
Delaware’s Redshirt senior forward Eric Carter earned his fourth straight double-double in the win ( 10th of the season) with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Sophomore guard Ryan Allen also hit double-digits in the Blue Hens win with scoring 10 points.
University of Delaware took advantage of their opportunities at the foul line in the game as the team made 13 out of their 14 shots from the line.
Horton’s 20 Points Helps Hens Take First Half Lead
The first half was all about Blue Hens Ithiel Horton who led the Hens with 20 points in the half. Horton went 6 for 8 from the field and went 6 for 7 from three point line in the first half.
The Hens started the game with a 6-0 run which was aided by Horton’s two three pointers. Horton would hit back to back three pointers after this run to give the Hens a 12-6 lead with 15:49 left in the half.
UNCW made things interesting at the 12:55 minute mark when Jeantal Cylla hit a jump shot to tie the game up at 14.
Then, the Blue Hens would go on a 13-5 run which gave the team a 27-21 lead with 9:12 left in the half. Ryan Allen was the leader on that run with scoring six of the thirteen points in the run.
The Hens would outscore UNCW 14-10 for the rest of the quarter to give them a 41-31 lead at the half.
First Half Stats
Blue Hens were shooting 51.72 % in the first half and UNCW was shooting 40.0 %.
Delaware was shooting 45.00 % from downtown and UNCW 33.33 %.
Blue Hens leading scorer in the first half was Ithiel Horton who scored 20 points.
UNCW’s leading scorer in the first half was Jay Estime who scored seven points.
Horton 11 Points & Hens Free Throw Shooting Leads the Team In 2nd Half
Just like the first half, Horton led the Blue Hens in scoring in the second half with 11 points.
In the second half, the Blue Hens took advantage of their time at the foul line as the team hit 11 of 12 shots at the line.
The second half started off with Delaware going on a 10-2 run to increase their lead to 51-34 with 17:20 left in the game.
UNCW would outscore the Blue Hens 35-31 for the rest of the quarter but that was not enough to catch up to Delaware. Delaware would win 82-69 as the final buzzer sounded.
The Blue Hens make to look it five straight wins as the team stays on the road to take on College of Charleston on January 12 at 4pm ET.
