Four in double figures as Blue Hens claim first CUSA victory, 76-69 over Liberty

The University of Delaware women’s basketball team earned its seventh win of the season with a 76-69 victory against the Liberty Flames on Saturday. This win marks the program’s first CUSA victory in its history.

Freshman guard Kailah Correa led the team in scoring in the win, with 21 points.

Junior guard Lay Fantroy recorded a double-double in the game, scoring 16 points and collecting ten rebounds.

Two other Hens players scored in double digits: Junior center Ande’a Cherisier (19) and Sophomore guard Trinity Vance (14).

UD had the advantage in multiple categories in the game, which included fast-break points (13-0), points off turnovers (16-14), and blocks (5-1).

The Blue Hens also had the advantage in shooting, with the team boasting 50%(27-54) and Liberty 40%(25-63). UD also bested the Flames from the three-point line, with the team shooting 35%(6-17) and Liberty shooting 23%( 5-22). Delaware also outshot the Flames at the free-throw line, with the team shooting 76%(16-21), and Liberty 67%(14-21).

The Blue Hens lead by ten at the end of the first quarter.

In the early minutes of this matchup, the lead bounced from one team to the other till it was tied at six with 5:30 left in the opening period.

After this, Delaware would take control of the game by going on an 11-1 run to end the first quarter with a 17-7 edge. Sophomore guard Trinity Vance and Lay Fantroy led the charge with scoring all 11 points.

Delaware trails by two points at the end of the first half.

Liberty had a new pep in their step in the early minutes of the second quarter, with the team blasting out to a 21-6 run to grab a 28-23 advantage with 4:40 remaining in the opening half.

UD punched back by outscoring the Flames 7-4 for the rest of the second quarter to head into halftime trailing by two points (32-30). Kailah Correa drained a three-pointer and had an assist during this stretch.

UD leads by five points at the end of the third quarter.

The Blue Hens brought the momentum they had in the late first half into the early minutes of the second, with the team dashing off on a 14-6 run to take a 44-38 advantage with 2:57 left in the third. Kailah Correa and Lay Fantroy caused problems for the Liberty defenders, scoring nine of the team’s 14 points.

Delaware scored five more points in the quarter to head to the fourth with a 49-44 lead.

The Blue Hens take home a 76-69 win!

In the early minutes of the fourth quarter, the Flames were hot as the team outscored UD 12-6 to take a 56-55 edge with 4:30 remaining in the game.

The University of Delaware responded by going on a 17-8 run to grab a 72-64 lead with 20 seconds left in the game. Kahilah Correa had the hot hand during this time, scoring ten of the 17 points.

UD scored four more points in the final seconds to seal a 76-69 win over Liberty.
