A hard fought game with a quick overtime winner is one way to open a season and Wilmington University did just that on Thursday.
Wilmington took a back and forth battle with Millersville and quickly ended the game in overtime which had the Wildcats take a 3-2 win on the road.
The standouts in the game for the Wildcats were senior forward Will Stone and junior defender Fredrik Bentdal.
Stone had four shots, four shots on goal, one goal and two assists in the win.
Bentdal had two shots, two shots on goal and one goal in the win.
Also, senior goalkeeper Vinny Tasca allowed two goals and had three saves in 90 minutes.
Wasting No Time To Score
The Wildcats did not waste anytime putting a goal on the board by senior forward Will Stone scored a goal at the 8:22 mark in the game. Senior Forward Sam Jester & junior forward Tom Garratt assisted Stone on the goal.
This gave the Wildcats a early 1-0 lead over Millersville.
Millersville Answers Back
Millersville answered back with a goal of their own in the late minutes of the first period when midfielder Jaxson Burns scored a goal which was assisted by defender Nathan Maynard.
Then in the second period, Millersville would score at the 62:47 minute mark to give them at 2-1 lead.
The goal was scored by midfielder Chase Flickinger who was assisted by Jaxson Burns.
Wilmington Answers Back With Late Score
Wildcats really liked the drama in this game as they waited late in the second period to tie the game at two.
At the 84:51 minute mark, freshman defender Ellis McSharry scored the tying goal which was assisted by senior forward Will Stone.
Overtime
Overtime did not last very long as the Wildcats junior defender Fredrik Bentdal scored from outside the box in just 30 seconds of overtime.
Bentdal’s quick overtime shot winner was the cherry on top of thrilling season opener.
Wilmington take on District of Columbia on Saturday at Millersville with a 4:30pm ET starting time.
