Wilmington University takes Game 1 in East Super Regionals with a 10-1 win over Adelphi

The Wilmington University softball team took home the first win in the three-game Super Regional series over Adelphi University Panthers on Thursday. The Wildcats beat the Panthers 10-1, and the victory moves the team one win away from the D2 World Series. Game two is at noon ET on Friday.

RBIs: Tristyn Stewart and Bri Coyle would lead the team in RBIs with two in the win.

Runs:  Taylor Gillis and Stewart also led the team in runs, with two in the game.

Hits: Stewart would lead the team in hits, with three in the win.

Stolen Bases:  Stewart stole two bases in the win.

Game Recap:

Wilmington would get the scoring started in this game as Sophomore outfielder Taylor Gillis would score on a passed ball in the top of the first inning to give her team a 1-0 lead.

Two innings later, the Wildcats would score four runs on two hits and one error to take a 5-0 edge.

Sophomore outfielder/catcher Tristyn Stewart would push in the first two runs in the inning by hitting a two-run single to center field to expand the score to 3-0.

 Junior third baseman/outfielder Sara Miller would be the next batter up, as she slapped an RBI single to left center field to extend the WilmU’s advantage to 4-0.

Sophomore outfielder Gabriella Saucedo would close out the scoring in the third inning by pushing in a run from a Sac Bunt to push the lead to 5-0.

Fast forward to the top of the sixth inning, where Wilmington would add another run to their total by freshman infielder Cassidy Zelano getting a baserunner home when she grounded out to second base to take the score 6-0.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Adelphi would push their first run home in the game when Kendall Winn hit an RBI single to right center to cut the lead to 6-1.

The Wildcats would still have their scoring touch in the top of the seventh inning, where they scored four runs on four hits and two errors to push the score to 10-1.

Two of the runs would come by error from the Panthers’ defense, as Tristyn Stewart scored on an error from the second baseman, and junior infielder Bri Coyle scored on a fielding error from the left fielder.

Coyle also pushed in two runs for WilmU in the seventh inning when she hit a single through the right side.

Wilmington would end the game with a dominating 10-1 victory over the Panthers.

Pitching recap:

Sophomore pitcher Kylee Gunkel had a solid outing by going seven innings, giving up seven hits, one run, one earned run, striking out four batters, and earning the win.
