Wilmington University starts 2023 with a 64-62 win over Holy Family

Wilmington University would lead by one point after one half.

The intensity was high from the very start of this game, as two would trade buckets and the lead for the first couple of minutes. The biggest edge in the first four minutes and 70 seconds in the opening half was when Phillip Brown Jr. drained a three-pointer to give Holy Family a four-point advantage (14-10) with 15:30 on the clock.

Wilmington would respond seconds later by flying off on a 9-2 run, which gave the team a 19-16 lead with 10:16 remaining in the first half. Justin Thomas and sophomore center Nalik Veasley scored eight of the Wildcats’ nine points during that time.

Starting at the 10:27 minute mark, the Tigers would answer back by outscoring WilmU 10-2 to grab a 26-21 advantage with 5:09 remaining in the opening half.

At the 4:38 minute mark, the Wildcats would start on a 16-4 run to take a 37-30 lead with 1:38 left in the first half. Wilmington was feeling it from the three-point line during that time, as they made three of them. The three shots came from freshman forward Kaleb Hedgepeth, junior guard Caleb Matthews, and Justin Thomas.

WilmU’s lead would shrink to one point (37-36) at the end of the opening half by Holy Family scoring six straight points to tighten the score.

WilmU wins 64-62!

Fast forward to the 15:08 minute mark in the second half, where Wilmington’s Taalib Holloman would deliver a slam dunk to extend his team’s advantage to five points (49-44). The five-point lead was the largest advantage in the first five minutes of the second half.

The two teams would continue to battle in the next ten minutes and 68 seconds, as the score would be tied five times during that time. It would be at 4:40 minute make where the last tied score happened with a score of 60.

Starting at the 4:12 minute mark, the Wildcats would take the lead for good as they outscored the Tigers 4-2 to seal a 64-62 victory over Holy Family.
