Pippin & Sconiers combine for 36 points in Blue Hens’ 83-80 win over Illinois

Blue Hens would trail by one point after one-quarter of play.

The game started with Illinois firing off to an 8-0 the advantage with 7:20 left in the opening quarter.

Fifteen seconds later, Delaware would outscore the Fighting Illini 21-13 to tie the game at 21 with 1:15 left in the first quarter. The trio of Nakiyah Mays-Prince, Klarke Sconiers, and Tara Cousins would score 16 of the Hens’ 21 points on the run.

The first quarter would end with Illinois making a free throw shot to put them up by one with a score of 22-21.

Delaware leads by four points at the end of the first half.

In the first three minutes of the second quarter, the Fighting Illini would outscore the Hens 9-5 to take a 31-26 lead with seven minutes left in the first half.

Delaware would quickly respond by flying off a 14-5 run to grab a four-point (40-36) advantage at the end of the first half. Kharis Idom was the leading scorer for the Hens on the run, as she scored five of the 14 points. UD’s defense was strong on the run, as they grabbed six defensive rebounds and three steals.

Blue Hens would lead by three points after three-quarters of play.

The first four minutes and 47 seconds in the second half was all Illinois, as they would score ten unanswered points to take a 46-40 lead.

Starting at the 5:49 minute mark, Delaware would respond by going on a 13-4 run, which gave the team a three-point advantage (53-50) at the end of the third quarter. Kharis Idom would score five of the Hens’ 13 points on the run.

The Hens wins 83-80!

Illinois would continue their hot starts to quarters by outscoring UD 7-4 to tie the game at 57 with 8:15 remaining on the clock.

Seconds later, the University of Delaware would answer back by dashing out on a 9-4 run to take a five-point lead (66-61) with 4:34 left in the fourth quarter. Makayla Pippin scored six of the Hens’ nine points during that time.

Starting at the 4:19 minute mark, the Blue Hens would outscore Illinois by three points (15-12) to hold on to an eight-point advantage (81-73) with 13 seconds left in the game. Pippin would score eight of UD’s 15 points during that time.

A few seconds later, Illinois would score seven straight points to slice the lead to one point (81-80) with six seconds left in the game.

Nakiyah Mays-Prince would make two free throw shots a few seconds later, which would help seal an 83-80 win over Illinois.
