Blue Hens defense stifles Morgan State’s offense in a 38-7 victory

Blue Hens lead by 14 at the end of the first quarter.

The game started with Delaware getting possession of the ball first, as the team would start at their own 23-yard line. The Blue Hens would not waste their first drive of this matchup as the team drove 77 yards in six plays to end, with wide receiver Jourdan Townsend rushing 17 yards for the touchdown to give his team a 7-0 lead with 12:36 left in the first quarter.

The highlight play of this drive came on a third and six at their 27-yard line when quarterback Nolan Henderson broke loose for a 33-yard scramble.

After Morgan State’s first drive would stall out with only 18 yards gained on four plays, it would be the University of Delaware’s turn once again, as they would set up shop at their own 16-yard line.

Despite being backed up in their own territory, the Blue Hens would have no problem in moving the ball as they went 84 yards in four plays to end, with Henderson connecting with running back Marcus Yarns on 72-yard touchdown reception to push their advantage to a 14-0 with 8:46 remaining in the first quarter.

The Bears’ offense was suffocated by Delaware’s defense in the first quarter, as they only gained 43 yards and were forced to punt three times.

Delaware leads by seven at the end of the first half.

Fast forward to the 3:51 minute mark in the second quarter, where Morgan State would start their first scoring drive at the Blue Hens’ 43-yard line. The Bears did not waste the short field given to them, as they marched 43 yards in eight plays to end with running back Alfonzo Graham rushing in for a two-yard touchdown to cut the lead to 14-7 with 1:23 left in the first half.

Morgan State would get the possession of the ball first in the second half, and the team would set up shop at their own 21-yard line. On the first play of their drive, MSU’s quarterback Duce Taylor would get intercepted by Hens linebacker Liam Trainer, who gained one yard on the play.

The Blue Hens would take advantage of the turnover as the team drove 22 yards in six plays to end, with quarterback Nolan Henderson rushing for a seven-yard touchdown to expand his team’s lead to 21-7 with 12:36 remaining in the third quarter.

The University of Delaware’s defense continued its dominant play in the third quarter as they only gave up five yards of offense to MSU, grabbed two interceptions, and forced two punts.

Blue Hens win 38-7!

The next scoring drive for the Hens would start in the early minutes of the fourth quarter at their own 42-yard line. The Blue Hens drive 58 yards down the field in eight plays to end with running back Khory Spruill hitting a two-yard scamper in the endzone to push his team’s advantage to 28-7.

One unfortunate thing did happen in the scoring drive, as quarterback Nolan Henderson would exit the game after suffering an upper-body injury after taking a late hit.

Zach Gywnn and then Ryan O’ Conner would take over for Henderson for the rest of the game.

Two drives later, Delaware would continue to pour on the points, as the team went 29 yards in 12 plays to end with a 39 yard made field goal from freshman kicker Andrew MacMillan to put the team up by 24 points (31-7) with 6:46 left in the game.

Morgan State’s next drive would be cut short after just three plays when quarterback Duce Taylor’s pass was intercepted by Blue Hens defensive back Nic Ware, who took the ball to MSU’s 38-yard line.

The Hens would not waste the short field given to them by their defense.

Delaware would march 38 yards down the field in nine plays to end, with quarterback Ryan O’ Conner finding wide receiver Brett Buckman for the seven-yard touchdown reception to extend their team’s advantage to 38-7 with 1:03 remaining in the game.

Delaware’s defense did not let up in the fourth quarter of this blowout victory, as they only allowed 22 yards, grabbed an interception, and forced a punt.
