Wilmington would get the scoring started in the fifth inning
In the first four innings of this game, both pitchers came out dealing some filthy pitches right away, as the two lineups only combined for three hits during that time.
That would all change in the bottom of the fifth inning, as the Wildcats had two hits and pushed in two runs to take a 2-0 lead.
The inning would start with Haley Downin hitting a single to left field. Sophomore infielder Arianna Millan would be the next batter up, as she would reach base on a fielding error from Georgian Court’s left fielder. Two batters later, Lexi Moore would hit a two-out single down the left-field line, which allowed Downin to score to give their team a 1-0 lead.
Freshman center fielder Tristyn Stewart would step up to the plate next, as she would reach first base on a throwing error from the Lions’ third baseman, but it would allow Danielle Hess to score to give Wilmington a 2-0 lead.
Wildcats win 2-1!
WilmU’s starting pitcher Renamarie Rocha had dominant stuff for four innings, but in the fifth, the Lions found a spark by getting three bases runners on Rocha.
Rocha’s day would be done after that, as she exited pitching 5.1 innings with giving up four hits, one run, one earned run, three walks, and three strikeouts, and earned the win.
Georgian Court would push in one of those base runners with an RBI walk to cut the lead to 2-1.
After giving up the walk, Wilmington’s pitcher Kylee Gunkel would get two strikeouts to seal the 2-1 win.
