Hornets bats come alive in late innings to spark 8-5 comeback win over Lehigh

Lehigh strikes first in the early innings

In the first inning of this game, it would be all pitching as only one man would get on base during each team’s time to bat. DSU’s Trey Paige was the only player who earned a trip to a base as he hit a double in the bottom of the first inning.

The bats of the Mountain Hawks would start to wake up in the top of the second inning as the team had two hits, which included a solo home run from Justin Butler that allowed his team to take a 1-0 lead.

After Delaware State left three men on base in the second inning, Lehigh would continue to add to their lead in the top of the third. Casey Rother would hit a two-out solo home run to push his team’s lead to 2-0.

Fast forward to the fifth inning, the home runs would continue to fly for the Mountain Hawks as Jake Whitlinger hit a two-run dinger to right field to give his team a 4-0 lead.

After five innings of work, Hornets’ pitcher Jordan Haddaway would exit the game as he went five innings, gave up four runs, three walks, four earned runs, and five strikeouts.

Hiram Davis would step in for Haddaway in the sixth inning as he struck out two, and had a Lehigh batter fly out to the right field.

Hornets climb back to win 8-5!

In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Delaware State bats would heat up to tie the game at four runs.

The action on the bases would start three batters in as Mike Worthington earned a walk. The next batter, Alan Alonso, would hit a triple to centerfield, which would score Worthington to cut the lead to 4-1. After DSU’s first RBI of the game, Trey Paige would hit a single to left field, which scored Alonso to cut the lead to 4-2.

The next batter, Miguel Rivera, would take the first base with a walk. In the following play, Alec Rodriguez would get hit by a pitch, which would have the bases loaded for the Hornets. In the next play, Krew Bouldin would also get hit by a pitch, which would allow Paige to score to trim the lead to 4-3.

After that score, Rivera would score on a wild pitch to tie the game at four runs.

Delaware State’s Hiram Davis would make quick work of Lehigh in the eighth inning as he had two strikeouts, and a pop-out.

DSU’s bats would remain hot in the bottom of the eighth inning, as the team added four more runs to take an 8-4 lead.

The inning would start with Mike Carrington earning a walk. Mason Brewer would be the next batter up as he would hit a single to center field. Then, Mike Worthington would hit a single to left-center field, which gave Delaware State a 5-4 lead. In the following play, Alan Alonso would get hit by a pitch, which would have the bases loaded for the Hornets.

Trey Paige would step up to the plate as he would hit a single to left field, which would score Brewer to push DSU’s lead to 6-4.

On the very next play, Worthington would be waived home on a pop-up by Miguel Rivera to give their team a 7-4 lead.

The last run on the inning came when Alonso would score on a flyout from Alec Rodriguez to push Delaware State’s lead to 8-4.

After climbing back to take the lead, the Hornets only needed one more solid inning from Davis to seal the win. Davis gave his team exactly that as he battled his way through the ninth inning to seal an 8-5 win.
