Wilmington strikes first in the third inning

The first two innings were the battle of the two starting pitchers as they each breezed through their opponent’s lineup with ease.

The Wilmington hitters would wake up in the third inning as Taylor Gillis would hit a single up the middle of the field. It would be followed by another single hit by Lexi Moore.

Lauren Lopez would be the next batter up as she hit a single to the right side of the field, which would score Gillis to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the third inning.

The fourth and fifth innings belonged to the University of Missouri – St. Louis

After making no noise for three innings, the bats of the University of Missouri-St. Louis heated up as the team had four hits in the inning, which included an RBI single from Ali Schoon to tie the game at one.

Wilmington’s batters would be held in check for the fourth and fifth innings, and the Tritons would take advantage of that.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, McKenzie Lamos would hit a solo home run to center field, which would give UMSL a 2-1 lead.

The Wildcats win 4-2!

WilmU would take advantage of the Tritons’ mistakes in the sixth inning to even the score at two.

The inning started with Kiersten Comer hitting a single up the middle of the field. Two batters later, Tristyn Stewart would hit a double to third base, which advanced Megan Sterling ( pinch-runner for Comer) to third base.

Two plays later, Sterling would score on a wild pitch as she would tie the score at two runs.

Wilmington’s starting pitcher Renamarie Rocha would get a ground out, pop out, and a USML player to fly out to quickly end the bottom of the sixth inning.

The top of the seventh inning would start with Taylor Gillis getting a single by bunt and then following it up by stealing second base.

Two batters later, Lauren Lopez would hit a two-run homer to centerfield, which gave the Wildcats a 4-2 lead.

It would be all up to Rocha in the bottom of the seventh inning to close the door on the win for WilmU, and she did just that as she had three ground outs and gave up one hit.
