Delaware leads by seven points after one-quarter of play
Dixie State would win the opening coin toss, but would defer to the Blue Hens who would start their first drive of the game at their own 25-yard line. The Hens’ first drive would be a scoring one as the team marched 75 yards on nine plays for Anthony Paoletti to punch it in for the three-yard touchdown.
Other than the touchdown, there were two highlight plays on the touchdown drive, and both came from quarterback Zach Gwynn. Gwynn threw two twenty-yard passes on the drive, as one went to senior tight end Bryce De Maille and the other went to Graduate Student wide receiver Gene Coleman II.
On Dixie State’s first drive, the team would drive 54 yards in 11 plays which had the team at Delaware’s 21-yard line. DSU’s drive would end with UD’s Andrew Pawlowski grabbing the ball for an interception to kill any chance of the Trailblazers scoring.
Delaware takes a ten-point lead at the end of the first half
The next Hens scoring drive would start at the 6:37 minute mark in the second quarter, as the team went 81 yards in seven plays for Dejoun Lee to run in it for a one-yard touchdown to extend their lead to 14-0 with 2:47 left in the first half.
The highlight play on this drive was when quarterback Zach Gywnn found Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Brett Buckman for the 41-yard reception, which set up Delaware at Dixie State’s 27-yard line.
Right after Delaware scored, the Trailblazers would finally get on the board as well, with the team going 75 yards in eight plays for Michael Moten to catch a 20-yard touchdown pass from his quarterback Kobe Tracey. Moten’s receiving touchdown would cut the lead to 14-7 with 1:04 left in the first half.
As the first half was coming to a close, Delaware had one more scoring drive in them as the team went 49 yards in seven plays for junior kicker Ryan Coe to make a 43-yard field to goal to give the team a 17-7 lead heading into halftime.
The highlight play of this drive was Gwynn finding wide receiver Thyrick Pitts for a thirty-yard reception, which set up the Blue Hens at DSU’s 28-yard line.
Dixie State closes in on Delaware’s lead in the third quarter
The Trailblazers would receive the ball first in the second half of this game, where the team would march down the field in five plays to make a 33-yard field goal to cut the lead to seven points (17-10) with 13:28 left in the third quarter.
Hens hang on to win 17-10!
As the Delaware offense stalled, their defense stepped up as in the fourth quarter, they would get the Dixie offense to punt on two of three drives in the quarter. The defense would help the Blue Hens to hang on for a 17-10 win over Dixie State.
